Wind Energy Poised for Dramatic Growth in U.S.
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Wind energy could generate 20% of the electricity in the United States by 2030, according to a new report by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Such growth would pose major challenges, but is achievable without the need for major new technological breakthroughs, said the report released May 12. "The report indicates that we can do this nationally for less than half a cent per kilowatt hour if we have the vision," said Andrew Karsner, DOE's assistant secretary for efficiency and renewable energy. Wind energy accounts for about 1% of electricity produced in the United States.

New ASHRAE Design Guide for Warehouses Available for Free
The latest publication in ASHRAE's Advanced Energy Design Guide series is now available. The Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Warehouses and Self-Storage Buildings gives guidance to architects, engineers and others on building design teams on how to use best design practices to create energy-saving warehouses. The book includes case studies of exemplary warehouse designs, as well as detailed “how-to” design guidance for construction teams. The book is available for free in electronic form.

Cooling Equipment Shipments Accelerate
ARLINGTON, Va.—Shipments of central air conditioners and heat pumps for March jumped 75% compared with February, according to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). However, combined U.S. factory shipments for March decreased 7% compared with the same month a year ago. Year-to-date combined shipments are also 7% less than in the same period in 2007.

2009 AHR Expo in Chicago To Draw Large Crowds
WESTPORT, Conn.—The AHR Expo® will return to Chicago's McCormick Place, historically the site of its largest Shows, in 2009. More than 1,800 exhibitors and more than 50,000 attendees and exhibitor personnel are expected to attend. Attendees are expected to come from more than 100 countries.

Largest Solar Rooftop System in U.S. Planned
SUMMIT, N.J.—A Pennsylvania-based energy company is developing what it says will be the largest rooftop solar installation in the United States. The 1.7 MW solar system will be installed on the rooftops of eight buildings at the campus of a pharmaceutical company in Summit, N.J. The system is expected to reduce the company's greenhouse gas emissions by about 650 tons (590 Mg) a year.

ASHRAE President Speaks Before U.S. Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C.—ASHRAE President Kent Peterson, P.E., spoke yesterday at a hearing, Building Green, Saving Green: Constructing Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Buildings, before the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming of the U.S. House of Representatives. Peterson's talk focused on ASHRAE/ANSI/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. He also spoke on the Advanced Energy Design Guides and other sustainability-related publications, including the ASHRAE GreenGuide, as well as proposed ASHRAE/USGBC/IESNA Standard 189.1P, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.

Review for Highway Lodging Advanced Energy Design Guide

The 65% Technical Refinement Review Draft for the Advanced Energy Design Guide for Highway Lodging is available for review and feedback until May 23. All remarks must be received by that date. Once received, the remarks will be reviewed, compiled, and responded to in a single Summary Response document to be posted on www.ashrae.org. To participate in the review, visit the AEDG Web page at www.ashrae.org/aedg. In the "Planned Guides" section, under the heading for this specific guide, the review process instructions and input form as well as a copy of the document for review (in a PDF file) are available for download.

The Eyes Have It

It uses less energy because it is all-variable speed and fully automated. System components do not always run at 100%. Rather, the pumps increase or decrease flow to meet demand and maintain optimal efficiency.
