During these difficult economic times, it is vital that you maintain your network ties to the ASHRAE community and that you remain current on the latest trends and technologies and gain a competitive edge over your competition. The ASHRAE conference allows you do this and more – fulfill your professional development hour requirements easily in one place; add to your professional value by earning an ASHRAE certification in commissioning process management; and reach out to industry contacts to bring in more business for your firm. While new construction is down, there are lots of opportunities for greening existing buildings, says Adam Hinge, an energy consultant from New York, ASHRAE has been leading the way, providing technical tools for building energy improvements, for decades. Attending the Annual Conference to participate in the technical program and various committees is a great way for engineers to learn, and keep their competitive edge during the current economic downturn. | |
ASHRAE Technical Program = Survival Guide With building industry firms and businesses facing challenges related to the economy, the ASHRAE technical program serves as a Survival Guide, offering sessions on engineering business practices and staying current with design practices. Sessions of particular interest include Keeping Your Business Alive and Well During Difficult Economic Times, Balancing IAQ and Energy Conservation Objectives in Schools, Real-World BIM for the HVAC Engineer and Optimizing of DX-DOAS Systems.
“Our current economic climate places even more stress on construction budgets, and the ability to provide my clients with the most current technology that best meets their needs is critical,” said Kay Thrasher, vice president of an engineering firm in Tennessee. “I depend on information that I receive at ASHRAE conferences to give my clients the best value for their investment.”
Fulfill Your PDH Requirements Even with travel budgets being slashed, there is no need to worry about your annual professional development hour requirements. The ASHRAE Conference provides you with access to nearly 150 PDHs, all in one location. It doesn’t get any more economical than this.
The ASHRAE technical program offers 130 PDH hours through some 100 sessions, many of which focus on optimal indoor air quality. For example, if you attend the large building systems track on Monday through Wednesday, you can earn 10 PDHs in addition to learning about design and case studies on a number of building types. Attendees can get New York State PDHs with courses from the ASHRAE Learning Institute as an option in addition to the technical program PDHs.
The ASHRAE Learning Institute offers practical “how-to” learning on a shoe string budget. With an opportunity to earn 24 PDHs through two full-day professional development seminars and four half-day short courses. Gain useful insights from experienced instructors to expand your knowledge. Ken Peet, chair of the Sustainability Subcommittee, worked with local companies such as Earthwell Energy Management, Inc. and ECT Services, on donations of goods and services. “We selected the church due to its existing efforts to save energy and for the existing expertise concerning energy usage within the congregation,” Peet said. “The church is having an energy audit done by LG&E and is participating in the Louisville “Kilowatt Crackdown Program”. This project carries out the mission of ASHRAE by advancing HVAC&R to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.” Those wishing to donate to the Louisville sustainability project can do so at the Host Committee booth located in the Galt House Exhibit Hall or on the meeting registration form. Information on the project will be available and each donor will receive a “Pay It Forward” wrist band. Take a moment to stop by and thank the committee for their efforts.
