“It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity,” is often used to explain the less-than-comfortable temperatures in tropical Florida. While the water-saturated air is perfect for hibiscus and alligators, humans have had to find their own ways to deal with the Sunshine State’s humid conditions. What better place to discuss this year’s conference theme: Building Sustainability from the Inside Out. Whenever the temperatures outside are too hot or humid to handle, ASHRAE ensures that indoor environments are comfortable and, most important, sustainable.

So what does the future hold for the members of ASHRAE? Will automation take away your jobs? Will the computer on your desk outsource its own jobs to India? Will major appliances learn to argue with us? Will the automation of health care lead to the automation of caring? Will someone be able to "google" a furnace just by looking at it? And, how come your teenagers can pay attention to ten things at once and still be, like, bored? Futurist David Zach asks some funny questions. In his thought-provoking tour of modern times he’ll offer some useful answers that will get people talking. With a friendly style and a few down-to-earth suggestions, he’ll help you face the future with a solid sense of hope and inspiration.
As one of the very few professionally trained futurists on the planet, David Zach blends the funny with the profound in this surprisingly practical keynote to help you decide what really matters. You’ll rethink the balance between change and tradition – and the need to hold on to that which shouldn’t change. At the end you’ll find yourself either thoughtfully quiet or engaged in some of the best conversations you’ve ever had at a meeting. Dave may not be the futurist you expected, but he is the one you’ll remember. (Oh, and he spent the first two years of his career working for one of the largest HVAC corporations in the world.) 2010 HVAC and Controls Supplier SummitThe U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Commercial Building Energy Alliances (CBEAs) will host a supplier summit January 28, 2010 in Orlando, at Rosen Shingle Creek, site of ASHRAE’s 2009 Winter Conference.
The summit offers suppliers and manufacturers of building equipment the opportunity to learn from member companies such as Walmart, Target and Hilton about barriers that prevent them from using cost-effective, energy-efficient strategies for their operations and to begin a dialogue on how to eliminate them. This summit, the third summit the CBEAs have hosted, will focus on HVAC and controls and will allow for one-on-one interaction between company representatives and suppliers.
The cost is $100. To register, click here.
The CBEAs are informal associations among commercial building owners and operators who want to reduce the energy consumption and operating costs of their buildings. Members work directly with DOE and its national laboratories to identify and implement energy efficiency technologies and practices. The supplier summits are a key focus of the alliances as they give members the opportunity to communicate their energy efficiency needs directly to suppliers. Alliance members also participate in technology procurement projects and, with assistance from the national energy laboratories, evaluate promising technologies and arrange collective buying agreements. DOE has launched three alliances in the retail, commercial real estate and hospital sectors. The alliances are one component of DOE’s Net-Zero Energy Commercial Building Initiative which aims to achieve marketable net-zero energy commercial buildings in all climates by 2025.
Past Attendee TestimonialsRead what past attendees have to say about the value of attending ASHRAE conferences. From networking to career building to learning about the latest technology, attendees say there are numerous reasons for you to take part.
| For the last 15 years, every job I’ve gotten has been a direct contact of a relationship I built through ASHRAE,” says Gary Debes, a design engineer from Philadelphia. In addition, Debes said many of the projects he has worked on through his years in the industry came through contacts made at ASHRAE conferences. The potential of ASHRAE meetings to help build your business is tremendous. |
During a recent National Capital Chapter breakfast, I was speaking with one of our active member’s boss,” said Dan Pettway, a sales engineer from Chesapeake, Va. “I asked him when the last time was he attended an ASHRAE Conference to take advantage of the seminars, symposiums and forums. His response was it had been a very long time. I asked him how he could not attend a meeting where the latest technology in our business would be presented and discussed – how he felt about not possessing the information to make him the most capable and knowledgeable competitor in an economy where only the best might survive. After a few minutes, the executive re-approached me and responded that in past years he thought that these sessions were for the young and less experienced engineers, but, after thinking about our conversation, he thought it might be a very good idea for him to come to Louisville. ASHRAE is the premier source for not only the basics, but for the latest and best technology in the HVAC&R industry. | |
 | Today’s crisis economy means the ASHRAE Conference is more important than ever because of the opportunity to hone your skills on building energy and indoor environment and refrigeration systems issues through formal training session, the technical program, technical committee activities, and, most importantly, networking with your peers from around the world,” said Sheila Hayter, senior research supervisor from Golden, Colo. “ASHRAE is on the cutting edge of leading the buildings industry to address the challenges facing the industry today with a primary focus to reduce energy consumption, which in turn cut costs and reduce emissions. The ASHRAE Conference is an ideal forum to share ideas, learn new strategies and stay on top of the latest developments in this area, making you more competitive in your own work. |
Making your existing buildings and/or designing new buildings with energy efficient measures is imperative,” said Ira Poston, a customer relations manager from Burlington, N.C. “The ASHRAE Conference provides you with the information you need to achieve that efficiency. With impending climate change legislation, energy costs could jump up 20-50 percent, depending on your location in the U.S.
Whether you want to expand your working knowledge, earn PDH’s or do general networking, attending ASHRAE conferences is a must. It allows you to see perspectives from various parts of the country, if not the world. By sharing ideas and learning from others, you stay on the cutting edge and ahead of the competition.
ASHRAE conferences are a unique and wonderful resource, far and away better than the conferences offered by other professional societies.
The Welcome Party and Members Night Out are great opportunities to meet with my ASHRAE friends.
ASHRAE’s Conferences offer networking opportunities that are of extreme value. The contacts I make are very important to me for my future projects.
A great way to earn my PDH’s for the year at one conference. |
