Volunteers 1Volunteering within ASHRAE provides you with a single resource for keeping up with technical advances in the industry. By volunteering, you gain direct access to new technology, technical information available that is universally recognized as authoritative and reliable and you influence the direction of HVAC&R technology.

Volunteering also provides unique opportunities to develop communication, management and leadership skills. Because ASHRAE is a volunteer-driven organization, you cannot turn to a better source for human resource development. ASHRAE offers countless opportunities for developing potential through volunteer work on a committee or at the chapter level. Benefits of volunteering include:

  • Strengthening leadership skills
  • Improving technical skills and the ability to work on technical issues
  • Networking
  • Accessibility to resources
  • Self-development and sharing of ideas

Volunteers 2How strong is the ASHRAE volunteer network? ASHRAE has a membership of some 50,0000 people from 137 countries around the world. Of those members, approximately 7,500 are active volunteers. About 2,500 Society-level volunteers serve on the Board of Directors, councils, standing committees, technical committees, standard project committees, etc., and an additional 5,000 or so serve in the regional and chapter structures. Assuming (conservatively) that each volunteer contributes an average of two hours a week, that would be 100 hours a year. Then, of course, 100 hours a year times the 7,500 volunteers gives us 750,000 person hours a year volunteer time. At a time value of $100 per hour, that’s an annual value of $75 million.

Clearly, ASHRAE depends on its volunteers for its continued success in advancing HVAC&R to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. Below are some of the most popular ways ASHRAE members earn their volunteer paycheck.

The First Step –Your ASHRAE Bio

An updated bio is required for membership on ASHRAE committees.  Membership is not required to serve on all ASHRAE committees, although membership is encouraged.

Chapter Level

With more than 170 chapters around the world, volunteering at the chapter level is one of the easiest ways to take part in ASHRAE. Volunteering at the chapter level helps you develop a better understanding of how the Society functions and how to receive the most benefit from your membership while contributing to the growth of ASHRAE. For more information on how to volunteer at the chapter level, contact Vicki Grant, ASHRAE manager of region activities, at vgrant@ashrae.org

Technical Committees

ASHRAE needs the input and experience of those in the HVAC&R industry around the world in serving on technical committees. As a member of a technical committee, you assist in planning programs for meetings, writing and reviewing Handbook chapters and developing research projects to improve equipment and system performance. Technical committees also advise the Society on all aspects of the technology it embraces. ASHRAE currently has more than 100 committees addressing a range of HVAC&R disciplines.

Standards Committees

Volunteers 3ASHRAE publishes more than 100 standards and guidelines, which serve as the basis of testing and design practice around the world. Our standards and guidelines are established to assist industry and the public by offering uniform methods of testing for rating purposes, by suggesting safe practices in designing and installing equipment or by providing other information that may guide the industry. By volunteering to help write ASHRAE standards and guidelines, you influence the direction of HVAC&R technology.

Standing Committees

ASHRAE has more than 30 standing committees, which aid in operation of the ASHRAE activities at the Society level, such as development of educational courses, approval of research projects and planning of student activities. Volunteers who serve on ASHRAE standing committees must first be nominated by either themselves or by other individuals or groups within the Society. For more information on the nomination process, please visit the nominations site

Commenting Opportunities

Volunteerism within ASHRAE is not limited to service on a committee. ASHRAE also provides means for membership involvement by allowing members and others to comment on its publications, Handbook and proposed standards.

Comment on Publications
ASHRAE has more than 300 publications, written to present the most current and useful information possible. If you want to comment on existing publications, recommend changes to existing publications or propose a new publication, visit http://xp20.ashrae.org/ABOUT/frm_pubcom.htm

Comment on the ASHRAE Handbook
The four-volume ASHRAE Handbook series presents fundamental engineering data, explains new advances in equipment and covers application of new technologies to solve design and operating problems. To comment on a Handbook chapter, visit http://www.ashrae.org/publications/page/158

Comment on Standards
ASHRAE standards serve as the basis of testing and design practice around the world. Proposed standards and addendum to standards are periodically open for public comment. For more information, visit http://www.ashrae.org/technology/page/331

ASHRAE Journal

As the magazine of ASHRAE, ASHRAE Journal seeks and publishes application-oriented articles of interest to the membership.
