Shawn LaBelle, Age 23
Bakersfield, VT

Shawn LaBelleJob:
Mechanical Designer, EIT for Vermont Mechanical Inc.

Favorite thing about job:
Every day presents a new challenge.  My job gives me the opportunity to work on a variety of different design build projects and coordination for plan & spec projects.  These projects vary from healthcare institutes, educational institutes to light commercial projects.  The chance to work on different projects enables me to learn and expand my knowledge of HVAC&R.

Favorite thing about ASHRAE membership:
The favorite thing about being an ASHRAE member is the amount of knowledge and resources that are available to me through ASHRAE.  Not only is ASHRAE a great resource for HVAC&R but it is also a great way to network and engage with other engineers across the world.

Why you won’t ever let your membership get cancelled:
I won’t let my ASHRAE membership get cancelled for the reason of missing out on the knowledge, resources, networking, and new technology advancements that are available to me through ASHRAE.  The fact that I am the Secretary and Student Activities Chair for my local chapter will keep me active in ASHRAE.

Carrie Kelty, Age 25
Lexington, KY

Carrie KeltyJob:
Mechanical Systems Designs & Drafter for CMTA Consulting Engineers.

Favorite thing about job:
Creating sustainable mechanical designs for education and healthcare.

Favorite thing about ASHRAE membership:
Expanding my social circle within the HVAC industry.

Why you won’t ever let your membership get cancelled:
The excellent resources that ASHRAE provides to help improve my knowledge of HVAC systems and their impacts will keep me continuing my membership in ASHRAE.

Funniest thing that has ever happened to you in ASHRAE:
When I was a student member of ASHRAE, I helped the local chapter’s Student Activities Chair.  We were planning for an E-day event where middle school and high school students were encouraged to come to campus and learn about the different types of engineers and participate in some problem solving activities, and the chairperson wanted to pass out an item to help the crowd remember ASHRAE.  As we were brainstorming on possible items, the chairperson with a ton of enthusiasm said “Oh, I know; we could hand out backscratchers!”  I almost lost it right then and there.  Fortunately, the backscratchers were nixed, and we agreed that color changing pencils with “ASHRAE” posted on the side of them would be a better item to pass out.

Nicolas Lemire, Age 34
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Nicolas LemireJob:
Project Engineer/Designer/Associate for Pageau Morel and Associates, a consulting engineering firm.

Favorite thing about job:
Being the one that influences the whole project. Creating something and seeing it work is an extraordinary feeling. Walking an empty land knowing what is coming up, walking on a construction site knowing why there is a hole here and there, seeing the final product before it happens, walking behind the scenes, knowing all the secrets of a building, seeing the people using it it and being happy about it. Basically, being involved from A to Z on a project instead of working only on a small part. That is what HVAC&R is all about for me.

Favorite thing about ASHRAE membership:
Being aware of new technical information before most people in the industry are. Keeping the pace to always be ahead. Meeting a lot of people within my chapter/region but also throughout the world. Being a part of something incredibly great and dynamic…..making a difference!

Why you won’t ever let your membership get cancelled:
I would never be able to. I would feel like I'm missing the boat of technology, that I would fall behind tehnically, that I would not professionnaly give the best I could to my clients. It is a matter of professional responsability. My choice is clear, I want to be up to date all the time. In HVAC&R, the best place to achieve that is ASHRAE. Without any doubt, there is just no equivalent Society that can do it.

Funniest thing that has ever happened to you in ASHRAE:
I have a lot of really good memories about ASHRAE. Even if it does not look like fun and is more serious, nothing says that we can't have fun doing it. All of my ASHRAE duties over the years have been fun. And the best thing about all this is that you can make really good friends of all ages from everywhere on the planet. People like me who feel like something serious is happening to our environment and we have to do something about it. Let’s do it throughout our careers, but let’s have some fun doing it!

Saunders Smith, Age 29
Washington, DC

YEA Bios: Saunders SmithJob:
Director of Product Section Services
Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute
Manage several Product Sections and their work (similar to ASHRAE TC’s and SPC’s), oversee certification programs, help draft international standards (ISO), follow industry issues and keep members informed.

Favorite thing about job:
The People!  I never have the same job from one day to the next.  I get to work with member companies on everything from standards to certification testing to regulatory issues.  My members are some of the best and brightest in our field and working with them provides learning opportunities and challenges each day.

Favorite thing about ASHRAE membership:
The meetings.  I really enjoy having the ability to interface with so many leaders of our field during the annual meetings in January and June and I find that I learn a lot at my chapter meetings each month.

Morwenna Wilson, Age 26
London UK

Morwenna WilsonJob:
Mechanical Building Services Engineer for Arup, London.

Favorite thing about job:
No two days are the same.  Every day I am privileged to work on a number of different projects with a variety of architects and clients.  But most importantly my job gives me the opportunity to use and improve my practical, logical thinking, analytical, creative and communication skills – what other career provides such a variety and therefore could be as rewarding!?

Favorite thing about ASHRAE membership:
For me the best aspect of my ASHRAE membership is that it gives me the opportunity to meet and engage with other young engineers from across the Atlantic.  And whilst we may be many hundreds of miles apart, it is always reassuring to hear that the day to day issues we face and subjects that inspire us the most are often the same.

Why you won’t ever let your membership get cancelled:
Maintaining my links with ASHRAE is so important to me because of the excellent work that YEA does at grass roots levels with young engineers.  I am also a committee member of CIBSE YEN (Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers, Young Engineers Network) in the UK and so I am eager to continue to experience the fantastic YEA initiatives and events that happen across the USA to see if there are ways in which we can work together in partnership in the future.
