Installation Tips for Some Users of Windows NT, 2000, and XP

Installing the ASHRAE HandbookCD: This CD features Autorun software to guide you through accessing the CD contents (Windows only). If Autorun is disabled, access the CD at (cd drive letter):\START.exe. For more detailed information, operation instructions, and known issues, please see the Readme file located at (cd drive letter):\README.txt.

First-Time Use Instructions for Some Users of Windows® NT4.0®, 2000®, and XP®: Protected applications may require administrator rights for CD access permissions installation. If you do not have administrative rights on your machine, or are not sure how to use the registry editor, contact your IT support group. After an administrator performs the following steps, you will be able to use the CD:

Windows 2000: Click Start, then Run, and type “regedt32.” Click OK. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine. In left pane, double-click on SOFTWARE and select FileOpen. From Security menu, select Permissions. Under Group or User Names, select Everyone (use the Add button to add this group if necessary) and check Allow for Full Control and Read. Click OK, then close Registry Editor window.

Windows NT: Click Start, then Run, and type “regedt32.” Click OK. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine. In left pane, double-click on SOFTWARE and select FileOpen. From Security menu, select Permissions. Under Name, select Everyone (use the Add button to add this group if necessary). Change Type of Access to Full Access. Click OK, then close Registry Editor window.

Windows XP: Click Start, then Run, and type “regedit.” Click OK. In left pane, expand HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE and double-click on SOFTWARE, then right-click FileOpen and select Permissions. Under Group or User Names, select Everyone (use the Add button to add this group if necessary) and check Allow for Full Control and Read. Click OK, then close Registry Editor window.
