Donley served on the Board of Directors as a director and regional chairman, Region X from 1978-1981 and was a past chairman of the Life Members Club. Donley was active in several Society, chapter and regional activities since the 1960s. His Society committee service includes Finance, Historical, Honors and Awards which he chaired, International, Long Range Planning, Nominating, Resource Development and the Energy Conservation Committee in 1974–1977. He served on TC 6.6, Service Water Heating, 6.9, Thermal Storage, and 1.10, Cogeneration Systems. He was elevated to the grade of Fellow in 1977 received the Distinguished Service Award in 1986 and the Exceptional Service Award in 2001.
