For Release: ATLANTA – ASHRAE will kick off this week’s Congressional Visits Day by hosting a breakfast on behalf of the Science-Engineering-Technology Work Group (SETWG). The day brings together engineers of all disciplines to meet with Congressional members and staff and officials from the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy to help improve scientific policies within the federal government. The breakfast takes place May 2 and will be held in the Rayburn House Office Building. Congressman Mike Honda (D-Calif.), who serves on the House Appropriations Committee, is scheduled to speak. In addition, ASHRAE members will meet with Rep. John Peterson (R-Pa.), who serves on the House Appropriations Committee, and Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) and Senator Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), both of whom serve on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. “ASHRAE has a key role to fill in maintaining the global competitiveness of U.S. science and technology and in solving the pressing worldwide problems of energy supply, protection of the environment, and indoor environmental quality,” Bill Bahnfleth, an ASHRAE member who will take part, said. “SETWG Congressional Visits Day provides an important opportunity for ASHRAE to join with other engineering, science, and technology organizations in meeting with our elected leaders to discuss these issues and to encourage support for the research, education and other programs needed to address them.” SETWG brings together professional, scientific and engineering societies, higher education associations, institutions of higher learning, trade associations and individual companies. The group is concerned about the future vitality of the U.S. science, math and engineering enterprise. The May 2 event follows a research and development briefing held on May 1 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an evening reception held on Capitol Hill honoring Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Lamar Alexander who will be recognized for leadership in the areas of U.S. innovation and competitiveness. ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of some 50,000 persons. ASHRAE fulfills its mission of advancing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education. ###
