ASHRAE Insights

By Alberto J. Sanchez, P.E.,
Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE, Vice-Chair, Honors and Awards Committee

In a recent ASHRAE Insights article, George Jackins, P.E., chair of the Honors and Awards Committee, discussed the importance of all ASHRAE members getting involved in recommending other Society members for the various Society awards that recognize professional, technical and community activities. This article outlines four of those honors: the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, the F. Paul Anderson Award, the Andrew T. Boggs Service Award and the ASHRAE Hall of Fame.

The Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award recognizes a Fellow of the Society who continues to perform preeminent work in engineering or research.
Bill Holladay, Fellow ASHRAE, and his wife, Louise, established this Distinguished Fellow award in 1979 after they realized that many Fellows continue to contribute valuable ASHRAE work, even after being recognized as Fellows.
Holladay joined ASRE in 1930, was a member of ASHVE, and joined the Board of Directors of ASHRAE in 1962. He progressed through the chairs to become President in 1968–1969 and was elected Fellow in 1950. Bill and Louise Holladay are remembered as an exemplary ASHRAE couple for their many contributions to the Society.

The Andrew T. Boggs Service Award recognizes a past Distinguished Service Award (DSA) recipient for continued, unselfish, dedicated and distinguished service to the Society. In the case of a Presidential Member, the services to be considered would be those continued beyond the normal duties of a president. The DSA point system is not used to determine recipients of this award.
This award was established to recognize the outstanding service and leadership of Andrew T. Boggs, who served the Society for 30 years. Boggs became ASHRAE’s Executive Secretary in 1967 and a Fellow in 1979. When he retired in 1985, Boggs was named an Honorary Member and Executive Vice President Emeritus.

Nominations for the Louise and Bill Holladay and Andrew T. Boggs Service Awards must include a detailed biography of the nominee and at least one letter describing how the nominee meets or exceeds the award criteria. Nominations must be received by May 1. Awards are presented at the Annual Meeting.

The F. Paul Anderson Award, the Society’s highest award, honors a member for notable achievement, outstanding work or service in any field of the Society. To be awarded this honor, a member’s accomplishments should include exceptional leadership in the HVAC&R industry, ASHRAE and in society.
F. Paul Anderson was an 1890 graduate of Purdue University. In 1891 he was appointed professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Kentucky where he served continuously until his death in 1934. In 1921, he was appointed Director of Research for the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers and elected president in 1927. In recognition for his dedication to educating engineers and his research and technical achievements, ASHVE established the F. Paul Anderson Award in 1930.
Nominations for the F. Paul Anderson Award must include a detailed biography of the nominee and at least one letter describing how the nominee meets or exceeds the award criteria. Nominations must be received by Dec. 1. The award is presented at the Winter Meeting.

The ASHRAE Hall of Fame, established in 1990, honors deceased members who made milestone contributions to the growth of ASHRAE-related technology. Individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame must have been a member of ASHRAE or its predecessor Societies.
Nominations for ASHRAE Hall of Fame must include a completed Hall of Fame nomination form, a detailed biography of the nominee, and at least one letter describing how the nominee meets or exceeds the award criteria. Nominations must be received by Dec. 1. The award is presented at the Winter Meeting.

Nominees for personal awards are selected by the Honors and Awards Committee one year prior to the time the award is presented. Therefore, attention to deadlines and proper documentation is important to prevent delays.

The Honors and Awards Committee encourages members to nominate other Society members for these awards. Visit the Honors and Awards Web page at www.ashrae.org/honors for forms and information, or contact the Honors and Awards staff liaison at rdouglas@ashrae.org for assistance.
