Region I In April, the Boston Chapter hosted a meeting to discuss designing industrial ventilation systems. While providing safe ventilation is the main mission of these systems, there are recirculation techniques that may be used in certain applications in order to conserve energy. Tom Godbey described the basics of industrial ventilation design for HVAC engineers and how recirculation can be used to reduce the energy intensity of these systems. Pros, cons and typical recirculation system layouts were covered. Director and Regional Chair Garry Myers installed the new Boston Chapter Officers for 2007–2008, including the president, Steven Rosen… The Long Island Chapter meeting featured a technical presentation by Mark MacCracken of Calmac on thermal energy storage. MacCracken demonstrated the basic types of TES systems, how they save energy and reduce costs and how this relates to the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED® rating system. Region III A seminar on ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings was held at the May Baltimore Chapter meeting. Lawrence Spielvogel, Lou Rugulo, Steve Rosenstock and Carl Watson were the speakers…Roanoke Chapter sponsored scholarship night with a panel discussion on sustainable design and construction. A total of six $300 scholarships were awarded to outstanding students from Virginia Military Institute and Virginia Western Community College. Region V The Detroit Chapter had a "fun night" by holding its May meeting at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Region VI Illinois Chapter sponsored a tour of the Chicago Center for Green Technology. The center is home to the local chapter of the USGBC, features four arrays of photovoltaic panels (providing 30% of the building’s electricity), a green roof, rainwater collection for landscaping, and bioswales. It has won local Excellence in Engineering awards from both the Illinois and Wisconsin Chapters of ASHRAE. The chapter also sponsored a half-day seminar on keeping buildings dry. Evans Lizardos of Lizardos Engineering Associates and Lars Teigen of Innovent were the speakers. Christopher McDonald of Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP, gave a presentation on legal concerns of IAQ problems… The LaCrosse Chapter had a presentation on fan applications by Bill Smiley of Trane. Region VIII The Austin Chapter hosted a panel discussion on the implementation of viable sustainability practices in design and construction. Region X Katherine Hammack presented a program on ASHRAE 90.1 LEED and 189P at the Northern Nevada Chapter meeting. Region XI The Mid-Columbia Chapter program meeting featured Don Williams, a.k.a. "Captain Combustion," for a presentation on boiler methodologies—designs, efficiencies and burner technologies. Williams’ presentation was an overview of how boilers work, how to select, maintain and design boiler systems and the advantages and disadvantages of one kind of boiler to another. The May meeting featured ASHRAE President Terry Townsend, who spoke on sustainable design applications. | |
