Region I
Bi-State Chapter held a meeting with the Manhattan College Student Chapter to encourage students to attend the monthly meetings. The Chapter has fostered relationships with Manhattan College, SUNY Maritime and Westchester Community College. Roger Schmidt, IBM Systems and Technology Group and TC 9.9 Chair, presented a program on mission critical facilities…The Boston Chapter monthly meeting featured a program on fuel cells in the USA presented by Jim Horwitz. Horwitz began the presentation with a brief history of fuel cells from 1839 through Apollo 13, and to the present, with an explanation of the basic technology and their current and proposed applications, such as commercial and industrial co- and tri-generation… Long Island Chapter celebrated its 50th anniversary. 110 members and guests were in attendance for the occasion. In honor of membership promotion night, Michael Ganz and Marvin Schecter of Turnstead & Schechter gave a presentation on alternative dispute resolution and litigation. The presentation addressed various dispute resolution procedures used in construction as well as their advantages and disadvantages… Niagara Frontier Chapter held a program on CFC refrigerant phase-outs in the context of ozone depletion. Distinguished Lecturer Thomas Werkema Jr. was the speaker… Rochester Chapter sponsored a joint meeting with AIA. A program on the effects of ozone depletion and global warming was presented by Thomas Werkema Jr.… Twin Tiers Chapter hosted the second installment of the William F. Albern Lecture Series with a discussion on legal issues facing practitioners of HVAC design and construction, presented by Distinguished Lecturer Chris McDonald. McDonald presented practical steps engineers can take to avoid liability and explained how documents and e-mails are used in litigation.

Region II
London Chapter presented a program on how boiler plant efficiencies will be estimated on a seasonal basis with reference to the upcoming SPC 155A Standard. Fred Campagna of AERCO International was the speaker. The ASHRAE Memorial Scholarship Award was presented to University of Western Ontario student Brian Coulter.

Region III
At the Roanoke Chapter monthly meeting, Dave Pierson gave a presentation on news that you can use: energy management certification. Pierson discussed the benefits of being a certified energy manager, Executive Order 48, Maintenance For Energy Conservation, an update on refrigerants and performance contracting under Virginia Code 11-34.

Region V
Cincinnati Chapter held a program on chilled beams presented by Ken Loudermilk of Trox USA… Detroit Chapter hosted a joint meeting with ASPE. Topics included new methods for simplifying hydronic system designs and enabling independently controlled circulators to coexist without interference, and diagnosing and correcting air- and dirt-related problems in hydronic systems. Mark Olson and Mike Schreiner of Caleffi were the speakers.

Region VI
Jim Douglas and Brian Wass with the Weidt Group delivered a presentation on building systems optimization through energy modeling and the impact of Standard 90.1-2004 during the Cedar Valley Chapter monthly meeting. The presentation reviewed energy conservation strategies for building systems with a focus on mechanical HVAC and how they can be used to gain utility company rebates and/or be applied to the LEED ® certification process… The Illinois Chapter Education Chapter featured its popular, comprehensive seminar series Basics of Engineering Principles for HVACR Systems Design.

Region IX
Kansas City Chapter presented a leadership seminar on communication and active listening: essential characteristics of effective leaders. Distinguished Lecturer Victor Goldschmidt, Fellow ASHRAE, was the speaker. Goldschmidt discussed the “Five E’s of Leadership”: envision, equip, empower, edify and evaluate. With them, the audience was challenged to further refine their leadership skills.

Region XI
Mid-Columbia Chapter held programs on low NO x  burners and data center design… The Northern Alberta Chapter hosted membership night. A specification enforcement presentation was facilitated by Traci Hanegan.
