By Patricia Adelmann, ASHRAE Research Promotion Manager For engineers, the question “when does one equal two” might seem like the opening line to a riddle. For ASHRAE research, it’s no joke. One dollar equals two dollars when an employer participates in ASHRAE’s matching program, pledging to match its employees’ investments in ASHRAE research. This means a $100 contribution is matched, resulting in $200 being invested into research. “You’re recognized for your investment, your company is recognized for their investment and research benefits from the increased donations,” said Randy Jones, chair of the Research Promotion Committee. For more than a decade, The Trane Co. has led the way in this matching program. It has invested more than $250,000 in ASHRAE Research through matched contributions alone. This year, two other leaders in the HVAC&R community are to be recognized. Johnson Controls announced it will begin matching dollar-for-dollar their employees’ investments to ASHRAE Research. Last year, Johnson Controls’ employees invested more than $5,500 toward research, with Johnson Controls pledging and contributing an additional $250,000 in endowed investments through the ASHRAE Foundation. “Regardless of the size of your company, it receives benefits from ASHRAE Research and has an obligation to give back,” said Joel Davis, vice president of the Chapman Co., a manufacturers’ representative agency in the Carolinas.
