ASHRAE Insights

NEW YORK—ASHRAE President Kent Peterson, P.E. recently traveled with ASHRAE public relations staff to New York City to meet with building industry trade publications as well as producers at NBC Nightly News and CNBC to discuss the subject of net-zero-energy buildings. Media representatives included editors at Architectural Record, Engineering News Record, GreenSource and Today’s Facility Manager.

“The tour has been successful in making new media contacts, reinforcing existing media relationships and for bringing awareness to the importance of reducing energy use in buildings versus automobiles, which is where the media interest seems to be,” said Peterson. “Hopefully, this is something we’ll continue doing in the future.”

The aim of the media tour was to get the word out about ASHRAE goals and activities and give reporters a chance to inquire about ASHRAE issues in-depth. Media members who participated in the tour have been invited to the Winter Meeting in New York.

The producers at NBC were kind enough to give a tour of the Saturday Night Live set and allowed Peterson sit in Brian Williams’ chair from which he broadcasts the NBC Nightly News. Hopefully, ASHRAE will be a part of that same nightly newscast as ASHRAE staff members continue to speak with producers about the importance of ASHRAE’s work in the building industry.
