ASHRAE Insights

NEW YORK—ASHRAE has inducted Frank Dean, a pioneer in HVAC systems design and installation, and P. Ole Fanger, widely considered the world’s leading expert on the effects of the indoor environment on human comfort, into the ASHRAE Hall of Fame.

The ASHRAE Hall of Fame honors deceased members of the Society who have made milestone contributions to the growth of HVAC&R technology.

Considered “an HVAC systems thinker,” Dean conceptualized and implemented an overall method of designing and installing air-conditioning systems that provided a unique combination of low first cost and low energy cost without sacrificing quality.

He was one of the first installers of VAV systems and stands out in perfecting the total system concept.

Fanger’s pioneering work on thermal comfort and indoor air quality provided the scientific foundation for standards across the world. He and his associates identified for the first time a significant impact of indoor air quality on productivity and as a cause of sick building syndrome.

Fanger’s pioneering work on thermal comfort and IAQ provided the scientific foundation for standards worldwide.

He was a senior professor at the International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy at the Technical University of Denmark. He established the center in 1998.

In 1992, ASHRAE recognized Fanger with its highest honor for living members, with the F. Paul Anderson Award, which recognizes notable achievements, outstanding work, or service in any field of the Society.
