ASHRAE Insights

CLEMSON, S.C.—The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) will conduct a study related to the mechanical engineering P.E. examination. It will be a standard-setting study conducted to establish the passing score for the mechanical examination.

ASHRAE participates on the NCEES Examinations for Professional Engineers [EPE] Committee with Presidential Member Bill Goodman serving as the Society’s representative.

NCEES is seeking more than 45 licensed mechanical engineers to be involved in the study. The panel must be diverse in terms of geographic locale, age, gender, ethnicity, and area of practice. The panel must be composed of recently licensed engineers as well as licensed engineers who supervise or manage recently licensed engineers.

Panelists will be asked to devote two days to the study. Travel and lodging expenses will be paid by NCEES in accordance with the NCEES travel policy.

The deadline for requests to participate in the study is Aug. 31. For more information, contact NCEES exam development engineer David Scott, P.E., at 800-250-3196, ext. 454, or via e-mail at dscott@ncees.org.

NCEES surveyed both academicians and practicing mechanical engineers in 2006 to determine the topics newly licensed mechanical engineers should know to be licensed. Among the changes to the specifications as a result of the survey was renaming the Machine Design module. It is now called the Mechanical Systems and Materials module to better reflect the covered topics.
