By Joseph A. Pietsch, P.E., Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE; and C. Brian Wandling, P.E., Member ASHRAE Technical papers are the core of what ASHRAE provides. Technical papers, which are a permanent record, are the written authority of our industry. As such, ASHRAE honors the technical expertise of these papers by choosing the best of the best. A wall-mounted plaque and honorarium for each award are presented at the ASHRAE Annual Meeting. Descriptions of the paper awards follow. Willis H. Carrier Award This award was established to encourage young members of the Society to contribute to the technology of the HVAC&R industry. The award recognizes authors for the best paper presented at the Winter or Annual Meeting of the previous year who were 32 years of age or younger at the time of the presentation of the paper. Crosby Field and Technical Session Paper Awards Every year, numerous published papers are orally presented at the ASHRAE Winter and Annual meetings. These annual awards recognize the authors of the five best published papers presented in the previous year. The author of the best paper for the year receives the Crosby Field Award and the authors of four additional papers are cited to receive the Technical Session Paper Award. ASHRAE Journal Paper Award This award recognizes the author of the most intriguing article published in ASHRAE Journal the previous year. Poster Presentation Award Every year about 50 published papers are not presented at a Technical Session and are displayed at the ASHRAE Winter and Annual meetings at a Poster Session. This award recognizes the authors that made the best poster presentations at Poster Sessions as determined by the Program Committee. Two awards are presented annually: one for the best poster presentation at the previous Winter Meeting and one for the best poster presentation at the previous Annual Meeting. Papers presented in the Poster Session are also considered for the Crosby Field Award.
