By William S. Fleming, Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE; and Nance C. Lovvorn, Fellow ASHRAE As a technical organization devoted to advancing technologies that serve society and promote a sustainable world, ASHRAE depends on work done by groups and individuals at the chapter, region and Society levels. Countless hours go into making the cumulative efforts greater than what could be accomplished by individuals. Best of the Best Each year, ASHRAE recognizes the efforts of individuals, deemed by their peers and appropriate Society councils and committees, to be “the best of the best.” These personal honors recognize members whose work has excelled in technical achievement and/or service in one of four areas. Milton Garland Commemorative Refrigeration Award for Project Excellence This award recognizes the designer and owner of a non-comfort cooling refrigeration project where the application highlights innovation and/or new technologies. One award is provided per year as recommended by the Society’s Refrigeration Committee. Dan Mills Technical Award This award was created by the Society’s Board of Directors in 1998 to honor the memory of Dan Mills of the Memphis Chapter. He demonstrated outstanding chapter communication in the area of government activities and contacts. This award recognizes the Chapter Technology Transfer Committee member who has excelled in promoting technical, energy and government activities. One award is provided each year as recommended by the Society’s Chapter Technology Transfer Committee. Chapter Program Star Award Chapter programs are a vital link to ensuring value is offered in a timely and systematic manner to each ASHRAE member. Programs provide a tool for continuing education that has long been recognized as paramount to the continued success in our chosen profession. ASHRAE’S Board of Directors established the Chapter Program Star Award to recognize excellence in chapter program endeavors. The Chapter Technology Transfer Committee selects one winner from those submitted by the regions of the Society. George B. Hightower Technical Achievement Award Technical committees, technical groups and technical research groups are responsible for material that ultimately is found in the ASHRAE Handbook volumes and used by members around the world. Much of their work is done outside the confines of a committee meeting at the Society’s annual and winter meetings. This award recognizes leadership and contribution excellence in volunteer service in one of these areas. This recognition includes all TC, TG, and TRG activities, except research and standards. One award is provided per year as recommended by the Society’s Technology Council.
