DENVER—Dongyi Xiao is the recipient of the Homer Addams Award, which honors a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project. She is a graduate student in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Oklahoma State University.

The Homer Addams Award is intended to encourage graduate student research and to perpetuate the memory of its namesake, who was a president of the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE), an ASHRAE predecessor society.

Since she started pursuing her doctorate degree, Xiao has been working on two ASHRAE research projects – ASHRAE 1052-RP, Development of an Analytical Verification Test Suite for Whole Building Energy Simulation Programs–Building Fabric, and 1199-RP, Updating the ASHRAE/ACCA Residential Heating and Cooling Load Calculation Procedures and Data.

For 1052, she has developed and documented most of the analytical solutions for problems related to conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer, solar radiation and infiltration. In 1199, she developed all of the inter-model comparisons of the new residential load calculation method with ESP-r.

She is a recipient of a 2005 ASHRAE graduate student grant-in-aid to conduct experimental validation of the new ASHRAE residential load calculation method, with the added distinction of receiving the ASHRAE Life Member club grant, as one of two top-rated applicants.
