The ASHRAE Posse
Jason Alphonso currently works for GRG, Inc., Maitland, Florida, and is designing two large condominium projects, each with construction costs over $100 million. He says that truly enjoys his work, loves the technological challenge and makes the best of the vibrant, youthful work culture his firm offers. He received his bachelor science in mechanical engineering from the University of Bombay, India, and his master of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida.
| Drew Harrison works for Trane Arkansas as a sales engineer. He enjoys working in the HVAC&R industry because you never see the same project twice and you are always in need. “When I moved to Austin, Texas, at the start of my career, I knew less than two people. After getting involved in ASHRAE, not only did I get to know all of the movers and shakers in the Central Texas HVAC&R industry, I also got to meet a lot of great friends and network both personally and professionally.” He received his bachelor of science in industrial engineering from the University of Arkansas. | Traci A. Hanegan, P.E., is principal with Coffman Engineers, Spokane, Washington. “I have experienced first-hand the value that ASHRAE membership brings. Stock market watchers say that, ‘A rising tide lifts all boats.’ I think the same is true of enthusiasm. It's infectious to those around us and contributes to a fun atmosphere.” She received her bachelor and master of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho.
| Julia Keen, P.E., received her bachelor’s degree (May 1998) and her master’s degree (May 2005) in architectural engineering from Kansas State University. Upon graduation, she worked as a mechanical/electrical project engineer in Waterloo, Iowa. Although she loved working out in industry, she decided to make a career change since her passion was in helping teach future engineering students. In July 2003, Julia returned to Kansas State as a faculty member in the Architectural Engineering and Construction Science Department with her area of specialty being the HVAC. She is a licensed Professional Engineer of mechanical engineering in Iowa and Kansas. Her participation in ASHRAE has continued since her involvement in college serving as the President for the Cedar Valley Chapter in Iowa, acting as the faculty advisor for the K-State student chapter, and contributing as a member of the Publications Committee. “ASHRAE has not only provided me the opportunity for networking professionally but also has enabled me to meet some of my best friends since college.”
| Karine Leblanc is a sales engineer at US Airconditioning Distributors in Los Angeles. She is a French Canadian from Quebec City and graduated from University of Quebec in Montreal in mechanical engineering specializing in HVAC. Karine was the ASHRAE president of her University student branch for three years in connection with the Montreal Chapter. She has served as a director and chairman of E-Week and Student Activities for the last past years in the Southern California Chapter. She is now the treasurer on her way to becoming the president of her chapter in a near future. “My dad is an HVAC teacher so I was brought in this GREAT world of expertise when I was just a little girl. And this is the best thing that could happen to me. I started attending our local ASHRAE chapter when I was 16. I met everybody in the industry and learned more and more after every meeting. HVAC is an exciting job, every day is different and challenging, there is so much to learn, you work in a team, you deal with many experts related to our field, the learning opportunity is infinite! Thanks Dad!” | Nicholas Long works at the National Renewable Energy Lab’s High Performance Buildings and Thermal Systems. “I enjoy working in research because you are always doing or learning something new. I am currently working on a multivariate optimization program that uses EnergyPlus to minimize energy use in commercial buildings.” He received a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the Colorado School of the Mines.
| Nicolas Lemire is an associate with Pageau Morel and Associations in Montréal.He says that the resources of ASHRAE are a major tool in his day-to-day activities for the firm. “I would strongly recommend ASHRAE to any young person considering engineering and more specifically the HVAC&R industry as a career choice. If you want a challenging job in constant evolution and are looking for the opportunity of making the difference for the future……HVAC&R and ASHRAE are the answer!” He received a bachelor of engineering and his master in applied sciences from the École Polytechnique de Montréal.
| Lily Wang, Ph.D., is an associate professor of Architectural Engineering at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Her professional interests are in mechanical system noise and vibration, but ever since she was four, her favorite extracurricular activity has been to sing (... usually not rap, though). She received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Princeton University, and a PhD in acoustics from Penn State University.
