Affiliation Approved

In early 2015, the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) became an affiliate of ASHRAE. The consolidation was approved by the Boards of Directors for ASHRAE and IAQA at ASHRAE’s recent 2015 Winter Conference in Chicago and a concurrent meeting of the IAQA Board of Directors.

The consolidation was seen by both Boards as beneficial to ASHRAE and IAQA in that it strengthens the programs and services of both organizations. The work of IAQA complements the work of ASHRAE in its standards, research, publications and educational offerings. The two associations now combine their resources to ensure the industry receives the best indoor air quality technical guidance and educational programs possible, which means improved indoor air quality.

What does this mean for both associations?

Under affiliation, IAQA is a part of the ASHRAE organization while maintaining its own brand and Board of Directors. IAQA will operate independently within ASHRAE’s organizational structure.

IAQA headquarters is located in Atlanta, Ga., home of ASHRAE’s international headquarters.

ASHRAE and IAQA Chapters

ASHRAE has a network of 187 chapters grouped into 15 regions around the world. IAQA chapters, both domestic and international, provide regular educational workshops on IAQ-related topics. Cross participation in ASHRAE and IAQA chapters is encouraged as a way to broaden the learning and networking resources available to members of both groups. The current direction is for IAQA and ASHRAE to assess locally the best mix of joint participation. This includes the opportunity to collaborate on joint meetings or seminars, host each other’s members, merge, or stay completely separate.

Consolidation History

In July 2014, it was announced that IAQA and ASHRAE had agreed in principle to join forces, combining resources to improve indoor air quality in the built environment.

Following a period of due diligence, the final consolidation vote was approved. During that period, a combined team of IAQA and ASHRAE leadership and staff worked out the details. The IAQA Transition Team was led by 1st Vice President Dr. Eva King, and includes President Kent Rawhouser; Immediate Past President Don Weekes; and Immediate Past Board of Directors Member Don Hermann. The ASHRAE Transition Team was led by President Tom Phoenix, and includes Immediate Past President Dr. Bill Bahnfleth; Treasurer Tim Wentz; and Region VII Director and Regional Chair Larry Fisher. This team worked to ensure IAQA chapter and member services are being maintained, and this process will continue for as long as needed.
