Overview:

Some Like it Green took the challenge to explore new areas of simulation methodology, workflow and team work to heart in our approach to this year’s Low-Down Showdown (LDSd). Though all members of the same firm the team was located across each of DIALOG’s four Canadian studios in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. We explored new methods for brainstorming and tracking team conversations at a distance and across time zones. Similarly we experimented with different ways in which algorithmic and generative design methodologies could be used to enhance early stage analysis of the building form and systems from both an energy and wellness point of view. The initial massing script took into consideration early functional design restrictions to the placement of program areas while allowing for different overall placement combinations, added a variable percentage of glazing, and a randomized screen. For this early massing, two goals were determined: overall solar radiation on the mass, and solar radiation on the floorplates as a rudimentary form of daylighting analysis. The overall radiation on the form was set to be minimized, while the radiation on the floorplates was set to be maximized.
