Reinhard Radermacher, Ph.D., P.E.

Reinhard Radermacher holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the Munich Institute of Technology. Prof. Radermacher is an internationally recognized expert in heat transfer and working fluids for energy conversion systems — heat pumps, air-conditioners, refrigeration systems, and integrated cooling and heating and power systems. He introduced ternary working fluid mixtures for absorption heat pumps technology. His contributions to the use of working fluid mixtures in vapor compression systems resulted in advanced cycles with new degrees of freedom for special applications. His work led to an energy savings of more than 50 percent in domestic refrigerators. His research ranges from environmentally safe refrigerants in residential air-conditioners and heat pumps to combined heating, cooling and power systems for buildings and campuses. Latest research includes development of design software used in the HVAC industry for the optimization of componetns and systems using genetic and other algorithms.  His work is featured more than 300 papers, as well as numerous invention records and patents. He has co-authored three books. Prof. Radermacher founded the Energy Laboratory at the University of Maryland in 1983 and is the director and co-founder of CEEE. Prof. Radermacher represents the U.S. at the International Energy Agency Annexes 13 and 34, is past vice president of Commission B1, and past president of Commission B2 of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR). He conducts lecture tours in Europe, Asia, and South America. Nationally, he is an active member of the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has served as the editor of the ASHRAE HVAC&R Research Journal since July 2002, is s Fellow ASHRAE, and holds memberships on two technical committees.
