ASHRAE’s HVAC Design: Level I - Essentials training provides participants with instruction that accelerates their transformation into effective members of a design, construction or facilities maintenance team. Developed by industry-leading professionals selected by ASHRAE, the training provides attendees with the fundamentals and technical aspects of HVAC design. Attendees will gain practical skills and knowledge to design and maintain HVAC systems that can be put to immediate use.

In addition to gaining in-depth knowledge and understanding, attendees will receive real-world examples of HVAC systems based on the renovated ASHRAE Headquarters building.  The training also teaches a systematic approach to guide a design team to a solution that optimally meets the client’s expectations. Engineered drawings of the ASHRAE Headquarters renovation will also be discussed so participants are exposed to plan reading and visual  understanding of system design.

The training is tailored for engineers with advanced experience in the HVAC design field, or those who have completed HVAC Design: Level I - Essentials. Developed by industry-leading professionals, the training provides advanced information that allows practicing engineers and designers an opportunity to expand their exposure to HVAC systems design procedures for a better understanding of system options to save energy.


Who Should Attend

  • Engineers with HVAC design experience (3-10 years)
  • Participants who attended the HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials
  • Architects who want an in-depth understanding of HVAC design
  • Facilities managers involved in new construction or major renovation projects
  • Technicians who would like to gain thorough design knowledge
  • Construction project managers involved with mechanical systems

Joel Primeau, Eng., ASHRAE Member, HBDP, LEED® AP

Joel Primeau is a sales engineer with over 27 years of HVAC experience. He has lead and assisted teams of engineers and technicians in the design and construction of high-performance, sustainable facilities.

Joel’s experience spans a wide range of engineering design and construction projects. His expertise is in the design of high-efficiency HVAC systems that enhance indoor air quality and comfort.

Joel frequently trains engineers, architects and facility managers on the design process, central heating and chilling plant optimization, high-performance HVAC systems, and heat recovery applications.

Joel is a Licensed Professional Engineer, ASHRAE Certified High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP), and a LEED® Accredited Professional. He earned a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Canada. After a brief career as an army engineer, Joel has since worked in the HVAC industry in consulting, facilities management and technical sales.

Dennis Wessel, PE, Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE, retired as a Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing with Karpinski Engineering, and has more than 45 years of consulting engineering experience. Dennis was an ASHRAE Director-At-Large (2012–2015) and past chair of the Planning Committee, Conferences & Expositions Committee and Handbook Committee. He was also past chair of both TC 9.1 Large Building HVAC Systems and TC 9.12 Tall Buildings.

He is currently a member of the ASHRAE Foundation, Development Committee and of the Technical Activities Committee and is a TC Section Head. He received ASHRAE's Distinguished Service and Exceptional Service Awards and was named Outstanding Engineering Alumni 2004 by Cleveland State University and Engineer of the Year 2003 by the Cleveland Technical Society Committee.

Cancellation Policy

Registration fees will be refunded in full if cancellation is received by ASHRAE Learning Institute at least 30 days prior to the training date. Cancellations received 15-29 days prior to the training date are subject to a $150 cancellation fee. Registrants who do not attend the training or who cancel less than 15 days prior to the training date are liable for the entire registration fee. A substitute registrant may be enrolled at any time by contacting Karen Murray by phone 678-539-1146 or email kmurray@ashrae.org. Member/Non-Member rates will apply to the substitute registrant.
