ASHRAE HVAC Design Level I is CPD Certified

This November, ASHRAE will present HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials in London, UK for the first time. This three-day course will take place 25-27 November 2019. While the fundamentals of good design practices are universal, the training has been adapted to meet the specific needs of European designers, whether they practice only in Europe or in areas were US standards are also applied.

    Cancellation Policy

    Registration fees will be refunded in full if cancellation is received by ASHRAE Learning Institute at least 30 days prior to the training date. Cancellations received 15–29 days prior to the training date are subject to a $150 cancellation fee. Registrants who do not attend the training or who cancel less than 15 days prior to the training date are liable for the entire registration fee.   • Level I

    The greatest challenge facing engineering firms and building owners is maintaining a work force that understands the fundamentals of HVAC design and that is current with the application of new technologies. To address this need, ASHRAE developed the HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials training. The course speeds the transition of recent university graduates to effective practitioners that are able to meet real-world design challenges and acquaints experienced engineers with technologies to minimize energy consumption, meet current standards, and improve building occupant comfort.

    Course Objectives:

    • Discover how to calculate heating and cooling loads
    • Learn the basics of psychrometrics
    • Evaluate building automation systems and controls
    • Understand hydronic system design and air system design
    • Select HVAC equipment and systems that meet needs of specific systems
    • Describe standard practices and design processes used by HVAC industry
    • Explain the differences and advantages of certain HVAC systems for specific applications

    Attendees will also have the opportunity to take an online short quiz on the content presented in the course.  Answering 75% or more of the questions correctly will earn the attendee a Certificate of Successful Completion:  HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials. HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials is an excellent preparatory resource to earn one of ASHRAE’s seven professional certifications, the Society’s highest recognition of professional development achievement.     Supplemental Content: Dynamic Simulation Methods in Building Design and Quality Control
    Buildings are massively complex systems, with design solution space consisting of millions of possibilities. A handful of single design simulations cannot explore that space efficiently, leading to suboptimum design. The talk enriches the design fundamentals course by explaining how multi-objective optimisation is used to search a large solution space of design parameters in order to achieve zero carbon performance of a deep energy retrofit. The talk also explains how simulation can be used as a method for quality control of completed buildings. Studies have shown significant discrepancies between theoretical and measured properties of buildings requiring reconsideration of design margins.

  • Instructors

    Charlie Henck, P.E., Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE, CEM, LEED® AP.

    Charlie designed and renovated healthcare systems, office buildings, laboratories, and data centers during a 40 plus year career with a consulting engineering firm in the US. Henck wrote, edited, and revised portions of ASHRAE Laboratory Design Guide, Second Edition, with a focus on air treatment.


    Ljubomir Jankovic, Ph.D., Ceng, MCIBSE, Member ASHRAE

    Ljubomir, is Professor of Advanced Building Design at the School of Creative Arts, University of Hertfordshire, England, where he runs Zero Carbon Lab. He has delivered numerous solutions for industry, on improving thermal comfort in buildings and on resolving simulation performance issues.


    George Pantelidis, Mechanical Engineer, NTUA, MSc, EUREM, Member ASHRAE

    George, works at ZEB in Athens, Greece, where he is head of the department for design and evaluation of energy proposals. He has over 1000 hours of lecturing in aspects of energy efficiency and is the author of the book “New guide for buildings’ energy inspections.”  He will instruct Level I in London.
