At least once a week during the summer of 2020 there was a recommendation in the news to increase ventilation in buildings as a good practice for reducing spread of viruses.  This is often easier said than done.  Designers and building operators have multiple tools available to manage or treat the air in buildings.  Air in your home is probably changed by an extract system, in most modern workplaces by a forced air ventilation system, and effectiveness of filtration on cleanliness of the air you are breathing is very often an unknown.  When faced with airborne health issues such as viral infections, are all systems the same?  What can we do for better design of future systems using these proven tools that have been available for decades?  What is the most cost-effective HVAC operational changes or system modifications to improve your existing indoor environments?
