Building EQ

ASHRAE's Building EQ Portal provides a quick energy analysis that benchmarks a building's energy performance. Building EQ assists in the preparation of an ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit to identify means to improve a building's energy performance including low-cost, no-cost energy efficiency measures and an Indoor Environmental Quality survey with recorded measurements to provide additional information to assess a building's performance.

Two different evaluations can be used independently to compare a candidate building to other similar buildings in the same climate zone or together for an assessment of a building's design potential compared to actual operation:

In Operation compares actual building energy use based on metered energy information.

As Designed compares potential energy use based on the building's physical characteristics and systems with standardized energy use simulation.

Building EQ Portal

The new Building EQ Portal is now available for the In Operation evaluation. The As Designed evaluation will be available soon.

  • Online data entry and submission process
  • Metered energy data exchange from ENERGY STAR™ Portfolio Manager
  • Median EUI calculation aligned with ENERGY STAR
  • Building EQ Performance Score visible to all users on the main input screen at all times
  • Redesigned label shows Building EQ Performance Score on a barometer/scale. No more letter grades!
  • Standard reports can be automatically generated by credentialed users
  • Improved submission approval process
  • Help and validation information is built into the system

Building EQ Certified Providers

Building EQ Certified ProviderEarning and maintaining an ASHRAE Certification shows an individual has met rigorous eligibility requirements, passed an examination measuring their understanding of the respective body of knowledge, and for those who have already passed the examination, kept the understanding current through professional development. These individuals have earned the highest recognition of their ability to deliver one or both components of Building EQ. ASHRAE BEAPs and BEMPs may upgrade their Building EQ accounts to credentialed users free of charge.

The Building EQ Certified Provider badge can only be used by individuals certified by ASHRAE as Building Energy Modeling Professionals or Building Energy Assessment Professionals. Please follow these guidelines when using the certified provider badge.

University Course

Benchmarking and Assessment of Building Energy Performance

University CourseASHRAE has developed a new university course on building energy auditing and analysis using the ASHRAE Building EQ rating system as a learning framework. Unlike other ASHRAE educational products that focus on continuing education of industry professionals, this course is designed as a traditional three-credit college course for upper-level undergraduate or graduate students. It seeks to offer a project-based learning experience through hands-on engineering in real buildings under the guidance of both academic instructors and industry professionals.
