Pittsburgh Ordinance Requires Public Reporting of Building Energy Efficiency, Water Use
PITTSBURGH—Mayor Bill Peduto recently signed a new ordinance that requires nonresidential buildings of 50,000 ft2 (4645 m2) or more in Pittsburgh to share their energy and water use data with the city. The benchmarking ordinance encourages building operators to use the federal Energy Star program’s Portfolio Manager software. The mandatory ordinance builds on a voluntary effort by the city’s downtown district, with a goal of cutting building energy use in half within the next 14 years.

U.S., Russian Companies Partner to 3-D Print Houses
WILLIS, Texas—A partnership of U.S. and Russian companies believes that 3-D printed houses could soon become commonplace. The companies also say they are on the cusp of being able to erect such houses in only one day. Texas-based construction company Sunconomy has teamed up with Russian 3-D printer manufacturer Apis Cor to realize this ambition. Apis Cor has developed a prototype concrete 3-D printer that it says only consumes 8 kW of energy and produces little or no waste. The printer is designed to be portable and can print in a maximum operation area of 132 m² (1,421 ft2). The companies have launched a crowdfunding campaign to build two “proof of concept” models of the small houses.

ORNL Tests Feasibility of Embedding Instrumentation and Control into Machines at 700°C
OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are demonstrating the advantage of embedding controls in devices operating under harsh operating conditions. They are doing so by using a pump to circulate a molten salt solution with a temperature of 700°C (1,292°F). "We wanted to do something that would be very difficult, if not impossible, to do using conventional machine design techniques," said Alexander Melin, Ph.D., of ORNL’s Electrical and Electronics Systems Research division. "But we also wanted a test bed that could benefit a great deal from embedded instrumentation and control." The goal of the project is to provide a framework to develop high-temperature electromagnetic components with embedded instrumentation and control. Such component designs are necessary to the development and commercialization of modern advanced reactors and could also be deployed in solar energy applications.



Pro Football Hall of Fame Developing 'Smart City' With Help from Johnson Controls
CANTON, Ohio—Johnson Controls and Hall of Fame Village LLC—a partnership between the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Industrial Realty Group—have entered into a 18-year agreement to develop a sports and entertainment "smart city." Under the terms of the deal, Johnson Controls will become the "Official Smart City Partner" of the under-construction $600 million Hall of Fame Village, which will include venues such as the Pro Football Hall of Fame Museum, a hotel and conference center, and the "Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Experience." The latter is a series of virtual reality displays and rides. A professional services contract calls for Johnson Controls' products and services to be used within the Hall of Fame Village. The showcase "smart city" will prominently feature the company’s building management systems, HVAC equipment, fire and security systems, and other technologies.

Supermarket Chain Kroger to Use Waste-to-Energy System
GREENSBURG, Ind.—Supermarket chain Kroger Co.'s K.B. Specialty Foods has broken ground on a new anaerobic wastewater treatment system at a facility in eastern Indiana that will turn food production by-products into energy. The current wastewater treatment system in the facility is open to the air. The new system will feature a dome that will capture biogas from food by-products at the plant. The collected biogas will then be harnessed to generate electricity. K.B. Specialty Foods employs 270 and produces deli, bakery, and side-dish items.

Simplified Chiller Sequencing for a Primary/Secondary Variable Chilled Water Flow System

To fully automate the central chilled water plant operation at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Fla., the challenge was to control the primary (production) chilled water flow to equal the secondary (distribution) chilled water flow demand for a variable primary flow and variable secondary flow system. The case study in this article illustrates concepts such as mixed-flow temperature calculations, primary pump VFD speed control, and chiller sequencing.

ALPHARETTA, Ga.—LG's Art Cool Gallery Multi F duct-free indoor units are designed to frame any 20 in. by 20 in. (509 mm by 509 mm) photograph, picture, or artwork. The units feature motorized oscillating guide vanes that allow control of airflow direction from side to side. A motorized air sweep louver automatically changes airflow by directing the air up and down for a uniform air distribution.

Germicidal UV Light System From Fresh-Aire UV
JUPITER, Fla.—The Mini UV CE UVGI light system from Fresh-Aire UV is designed to fit mini-split AC systems. The germicidal UV light features an active power supply with a digital filtering process to accommodate all mini-split heat pumps, including inverter models. The active power supply is designed to double the product’s lifespan compared to conventional models.
