ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Visits Colombia Chapter
By Fabio Clavijo, Member ASHRAE
The Colombia Chapter thought a long expected visit of an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer to the fairly new chapter would bring in new experiences and challenges to the Board of Governors as we are still trying to understand how things work in ASHRAE and how we can gain in experience and plan activities in the near future.
After enjoying Jim Newman´s warm and easygoing personality everything looked easy and enjoyable as we moved through each one of the five sessions planned for those three days, in fact we realized in our way that for Jim it was a very demanding task. Nevertheless, despite his extended work until late night to adjust every slide on his presentations for each audience profile, he kept a wonderful mood and interest in our city, activities and chapter plans.
It is not surprising how people would gather around Jim after each presentation to look for more information and references on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and integrated design.
Jim´s visit to Bogotá included technical sessions with our student branches, where introductory presentations would show how the HVAC engineering world works toward improving energy and environmental performance in buildings for the coming years. Students and professors from different universities showed up in these sessions with increasing interest to move their programs to support these challenges. It is good for ASHRAE and good for Colombia as we engage critical partners and universities in our research for existing buildings and energy audits.
Second day sessions were focused to more experienced HVAC and construction professionals that found Jim´s “Transforming Older Buildings into High Performance Facilities,” an outstanding presentation that kept attendees’ eyes wide open as energy efficiency opportunities and environmental facts showed up through the sessions, to conclude with how much are we still have to deliver on our end toward better designed sustainable buildings for the future generations.
Last day sessions spoke to energy and sustainability in existing buildings, as well as data centers energy performance certifications with industry and ASHRAE members. The afternoon was dedicated to a final session and visit to Bogotá International Industry Fair, where ACAIRE Colombian HVAC+R Association was supporting the exposition of the most relevant industry leaders of the market.
The activity schedule allowed Jim to visit the Gold Museum and other glamorous city places to relax and enjoy the Colombian happy way of living.
While we thank Jim for his commitment on his visit, we realize how much we have learned thru his experience and dedication. Also, he knows already that future activities in our region with his support are welcome.
