Bellenger Scholarship Presented

By Maureen Grasso, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, ASHRAE Foundation Trustee

GREENSBORO, N.C.—The genesis of the Lynn G. Bellenger Scholarship Fund was a dream. The dream was to educate women engineering students whose interests matched the mission of ASHRAE. That dream has been realized with the awarding of the first Lynn G. Bellenger scholarship to Tiffany Williams.

Williams is a senior at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C., where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering.  She serves as secretary of her school’s student branch.

Tom Phoenix, ASHRAE treasurer, was present at the North Piedmont Chapter meeting in February during the presentation of the award. He reports that it was a very exciting chapter meeting because of the moving ceremony and enthusiasm of the attendees for Williams’ accomplishment.

“Receiving the very first Lynn G. Bellenger Scholarship was a very special occasion for Tiffany, her fellow NC A&T students and the members of the North Piedmont Chapter,” he said. “As ASHRAE’s first female president, Lynn served as a role model for Tiffany and all women who want to pursue a career in engineering.”

“It is truly a blessing to have received this ASHRAE scholarship,” said Williams. “Having been the first recipient of the Lynn G. Bellenger scholarship is tremendously rewarding. Being a transfer student has taught me a lot about perseverance and dedication in order to maintain success, and I believe this scholarship is a reflection of that. As rewarding as this scholarship is, I will continue to stay humble and motivated in pursuing my goals in life.”

The Bellenger scholarship and all scholarships supported by the ASHRAE Foundation are made possible by the support of generous ASHRAE members. These important educational awards support ASHRAE’s mission of advancing the field of HVAC&R to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.
