STROVOLOS, Cyprus—A chartering ceremony for the Cyprus section was held this spring on April 26 in Strovolos, Cyprus’ second largest city. Eighteen members and invitees attended including the mayor of Strovolos, Dr. Lazaros Savvides, and the former mayor as well, as the chair of the Cypriot mechanical engineers association, Eliza Vasiliou. Among the attendees was Paris Lenas, an ASHRAE Fellow and the member who first began work to form a chapter in the 1990s.

The mayor of Strovolos spoke about the importance of ASHRAE to the HVACR industry and its contribution toward setting the stage for energy efficiency. He wished the section success in its endeavor and expressed happiness that ASHRAE chose the city’s civic center for its inauguration. The chartering ceremony was conducted by the sub-region chair, Bassam Elassaad, who thanked the mayor and the chair of the engineering society for their attendance and support and the members who signed the petition for their initiative. He also talked about the cooperation of ASHRAE with the ASHRAE Associate Society Alliance of which the Cypriot society is a member. He explained the duties of the Board and urged members to support them and participate in the activities of the Section.

The sub-region chair then proceeded with the chartering process and installed Polyvios Eleftheriou as president. The president will contact members to form the rest of the Board during the month of May.
