New Strategic Plan to Chart ASHRAE's Future
ASHRAE’s Board and Planning Committee a considering several overarching questions as the Society completes work on a new strategic plan. It is to be what President Bill Bahnfleth calls "a new plan that can guide us over the next 10 to 15 years...." The intent of the plan is to position the Society for continued success within a changing global environment for the industry. Before adoption of a new strategic plan, the ASHRAE Planning Committee is developing an overview of complementary tools and resources to support plan implementation including a business plan and an implementation plan. The Board of Directors will discuss the initial components of the plan, including a strategic map of the plan’s objectives and goals, during the 2014 Winter Conference in New York. ASHRAE’s current strategic plan was adopted in 2006.
Growing ASHRAE: The Society's First Strategic Plan
|The first |
The last 30 years of ASHRAE's history has been guided by strategic planning. In 1983, the Board of Directors initiated development of a wide ranging strategic plan to guide ASHRAE. By 1984, ASHRAE membership stood at just under 50,000 persons, including 10,700 members outside the U.S. Members resided in 120 countries. ASHRAE was growing. And ASHRAE’s leadership realized it was time to plan for continued growth by implementing a strategic plan. The 25 objectives that made up ASHRAE’s first Strategic Plan included increasing funding for research, continuing initiatives to promulgate voluntary consensus standards, and increasing non-U.S. membership and participation, among a myriad of other goals.
Membership Renewal Process Enhanced
|Doug Fick |
Based on feedback from members, ASHRAE has listened and enhanced the online membership renewal process to ensure a more intuitive experience, according to Douglas D. Fick, Membership Promotions Committee chair. The simplified process provides a personalized, custom experience based on the user’s membership grade. Personal information is displayed in a new format utilizing accordion type folders that can be expanded with a mouse click, as opposed to requiring the user to navigate to a new screen.
AAON for Health Care Applications
AAON equipment is ideal for Health Care Applications, with precision humidity and temperature control, high efficiency filtration, and seismic certification. AAON rooftop units, condensing units, and chillers are available today that passed shake table testing, in accordance with ASCE/SEI 7-05 and ICC-ES AC 156, and this equipment is pre-approved to meet even the strictest seismic building codes.
Technology Awards Recognize Outstanding Building Designs
A net zero energy facility, a historic building, a cheese factory, a residence, a college building and an agriscience farm are being recognized by ASHRAE as innovative buildings. The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design. Their designs incorporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and indoor air quality. The awards communicate innovative systems design to other ASHRAE members and highlight technological achievements of ASHRAE to others around the world. Winning projects are selected from entries earning regional awards. First place awards will be presented at the ASHRAE 2014 Winter Conference in New York.
Presentations Sought for Developing Economies Conference
Presentations are sought for a conference that will focus on the design, construction and operation of buildings in developing economies. Organized by ASHRAE along with the Philippines Chapter, the Efficient, High Performance Buildings for Developing Economies Conference will take place April 24–25, in Manila. Presenter proposals are due Jan. 31. A 400-word abstract addressing a specific topic and speaker background information are required. Presentations of case studies, preferably with actual performance data, are of most interest. The conference is cosponsored by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and endorsed by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO).
New Project Planning Tools for Engineers Available
Two tools to help consulting engineers in project planning and in fair risk/reward sharing with clients are now available for free to ASHRAE members through an agreement with The Council of American Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (CAMEE). The first tool is a MEP/FP Project Planning Worksheet developed for engineering consulting firms that are engaged in the design of building systems. The worksheet serves as a platform to help engineering consulting firms develop internal processes that will strengthen the business-related aspects of their organizations. The "Fair Risk and Reward Sharing with Your Client" document serves as a sample agreement for providing MEP/FP engineering services directly to clients. CAMEE is a coalition of mechanical/electrical engineering firms within the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).
Conference in Qatar to Focus on Hot Climates
Registration is now open for the first International Conference on Energy and Indoor Environment for Hot Climates, which will examine the latest research and energy-efficiency technology in high ambient temperature climates. Organized by ASHRAE, the ASHRAE Qatar Oryx Chapter and the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), the Conference will be held Feb. 24–26, in Doha, Qatar.
