Forty-six people were recognized by ASHRAE for their contributions to the Society and the building industry during the recent 2014 ASHRAE Winter Conference. The F. Paul Anderson Award, the Society’s highest honor, is awarded for notable achievement of outstanding services performed in the HVAC&R field. The recipient is Presidential Member Kent Peterson, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, ASHRAE-Certified Building Energy Assessment Professional. The Hall of Fame honors deceased members of the Society who have made milestone contributions to the growth of HVAC&R technology. The recipient is Fred Wolf Jr., who contributed to the development of home refrigeration and played an active role in mass-marketing one of the first simple, inexpensive household refrigerators, the DOMELRE, in 1913. In addition, the Society elevated 15 members to the grade of Fellow ASHRAE, the membership grade that recognizes members who have attained distinction and made substantial contributions.

Winter Storm Doesn't Chill Winter Conference Attendance
|A large crowd awaits entrance. |
Even Winter Storm Janus couldn’t deter the thousands of attendees of the ASHRAE 2014 Winter Conference. In spite of the snow storm, the Conference, held Jan. 18–22 in New York, attracted more than 2,800 attendees. Also, the ASHRAE cosponsored AHR Expo, held in conjunction with the Conference, saw record numbers. According to Show organizer International Exposition Company, a total of over 61,000 attendees (42,991 visitors and 18,219 exhibitor personnel) registered for the 2014 AHR Expo. HVAC&R professionals from all 50 states and more than 130 countries braved the elements to see the latest products and technologies on display from more than 1,900 exhibiting companies from around the world. Pending verification, these figures make the 2014 AHR Expo the Show with the highest registered attendance in the history of the exposition.

ASHRAE Publishes New Version of GreenGuide
The newly published ASHRAE GreenGuide: Design, Construction, and Operation of Sustainable Buildings, 4th Edition, contains updated guidance that reflects how green building practices as well as the industry have changed. According to Tom Lawrence, a member of ASHRAE Technical Committee TC 2.8, Building Environmental Impacts and Sustainability, the fourth edition contains several important changes. The changes include a complete revision of the indoor environmental quality chapter, with much of the content based on ASHRAE's Indoor Air Quality Guide: Best Practices for Design, Construction and Commissioning. Another is a new chapter on sustainable sites. Also, as in previous editions, the book contains "GreenTips," sidebars containing information on techniques, processes, measures or systems. There are 44 GreenTips in this edition, including new ones on topics such as condensing boilers, rain gardens, green roofs and data centers. The book now contains figures printed in color, making them easier to read. The GreenGuide is available as a hard copy, or as PDF and ebook (.epub) for download.
ASHRAE Shares Trade Show Tips
| ASHRAE frequently maintains a presence at its own and outside conferences throughout the world. |
Every year, ASHRAE participates in a number of similar tradeshows geared toward creating more sustainable buildings. These shows give the Society opportunities to reach professionals in the building industry who might not necessarily be engineers but are just as vitally important in maintaining a green building, such as building owners, architects, facility managers and even students and teachers.
In 2014, ASHRAE is exhibiting at several trade shows and events. These trade shows offer an opportunity for ASHRAE to influence all aspects of a green building, from design and construction to occupancy.
