ASHRAE, IAQA Agree to Join Forces
ASHRAE and the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) have agreed in principle to join forces and combine resources to improve indoor air quality in the built environment. Pending a three- to six-month period of due diligence, IAQA will become part of the ASHRAE organization while maintaining its own brand and board of directors. IAQA will operate independently within ASHRAE’s organizational structure. Plans call for IAQA headquarters to relocate from Rockville, Md., to ASHRAE’s headquarters in Atlanta. The agreement was reached between the leadership of both associations and confirmed at the 2014 ASHRAE Annual Conference in Seattle.

ASHRAE is part of a newly formed alliance that aims to serve as a global source for information, guidance and knowledge on indoor environmental quality. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) creating the Indoor Environment Quality Global Alliance was signed at the recent 2014 ASHRAE Annual Conference in Seattle. Other groups joining the Alliance are the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre (AIVC), the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA), the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) and the Federation of European Heating and Air-Conditioning Associations (REHVA).
BEMP Practice Exam Now Available
ASHRAE has launched a practice exam for the Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) certification. The practice exam is designed to be similar in content and difficulty to the actual certification exam. It is a low-cost, online tool for limited self-assessment with a score report overview of performance at the end of the exam. Practice exams are already in place for the BEAP, CPMP and HFDP certifications. Practice exams for the HBDP and OPMP certifications are under development and should be launched later this year.

2013-14 President Bahnfleth Visits South Africa
In June, 2013-14 President Bill Bahnfleth made history as the first sitting ASHRAE president to visit South Africa, spending a week meeting with various local industry players and sightseeing. Bahnfleth met with representatives of the South African Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (SAIRAC), the Consulting Engineers of South Africa (CESA), the Department of Environmental Affairs, the South Africa Air Conditioning Contractors Association (SARACCA), and the Council for Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR). He also gave a speech to a joint ASHRAE/SAIRAC meeting, focusing on his ASHRAE presidential theme, as well as integrating indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy efficiency in buildings.
ASHRAE Publishes 90.1 User's Manual
ASHRAE has published a User's Manual that provides detailed instruction for the design of commercial and high-rise residential buildings to ensure their compliance with ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2013, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. Developed to minimize multiple interpretations of Standard 90.1, the manual helps users of Standard 90.1-2013 understand its principles and requirements and how to comply with them. It is written in clear, direct language, and includes measurements and calculations in both I-P and SI units for use with either edition of Standard 90.1-2013. It includes sample calculations, application examples, forms to demonstrate compliance, and references to helpful resources and websites.
Terminology Web Page Provides 3,700 Definitions
ASHRAE has launched ASHRAE Terminology, a new comprehensive online glossary of more than 3,700 terms related to the built environment, with a focus on HVAC&R as well as envelope, electrical, lighting, water and energy use, and measurement terms. It replaces a site created in 2012 known as the ASHRAEwiki. "ASHRAE Terminology benefits users by being more streamlined, simpler and more usable compared to the wiki," said Art Hallstrom, a member of TC 1.6, Terminology. "In addition, the Terminology page has less clutter in that it does not include multiple definitions from multiple standards (for a given term). ASHRAE Terminology is intended for the general user, including the public as well as for technical writers and standards developers."
