The New Refrigerants Landscape: Challenges & Opportunities (MENA)

Discuss | Collaborate | Practice

Course Length: 3 hours

This training provides a background review of international treaties and initiatives that support the refrigerant technology transition. It starts with historical review of transition away from ozone depleting substances (ODS) and focuses on current transition from hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants towards low-global-warming-potential (GWP) substances. A review of proposed refrigerants and how they can be used in different HVAC&R applications based on theoretical and empirical analyses is discussed. Challenges and opportunities associated with the different types of refrigerants: hydrofluoroolefins and natural refrigerants are presented. Relevant refrigerant options for high ambient temperature (HAT) environments, and standards, codes of systems and substances are also covered. Finally, the course wraps up with a discussion on the systems perspective and how to best understand the opportunities for energy-efficiency improvements.
