Chapter 14, Climatic Design Information, from the 2021 ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals

worldwide climate data.jpgWorldwide Climate Data for HVAC Calculations

Includes climatic design information tables (from ASHRAE Research Project RP-1847) for 9,237 locations in the United States, Canada, and around the world—information used for design, sizing, distribution, installation, and marketing of HVAC and dehumidification equipment, as well as for other energy-related processes in residential, agricultural, commercial, and industrial applications.

Tables, included as a .zip file with the purchase of the chapter (.pdf), include dry-bulb, wet-bulb, and dew-point temperatures; wind speed with direction at various frequencies of occurrence; monthly degree-days to various bases; precipitation; and parameters to calculate clear-sky irradiance. Information includes monthly and annual percentiles, to provide seasonally representative combinations of temperature, humidity, and solar conditions.

These data are also available through a subscription to ASHRAE Handbook Online.

Weather Data Viewer 2021

Purchase as a stand-alone online product, access as part of ASHRAE Handbook Online, or purchase a license to use the raw data

The new online Weather Data Viewer 2021 provides climatic design information for 9,237 weather stations worldwide, including quantities such as dry-bulb temperature, dew-point temperature, wet-bulb temperature, wind speed, and wind direction at various frequencies of occurrence over a long period (8+ years) as well as access to the underlying frequency data for further analysis and visualization.

Users can plot the frequency distribution, the cumulative distribution function, and the mean coincident functions and view joint frequency matrices of dry-bulb temperature and time of day (also known as temperature bin data) and additional information, such as the months and years that were used for station design condition calculations.

Weather Data Viewer 2021 also implements various calculation methods found in the ASHRAE Handbook, such as those for return period minimum/maximum temperatures, degree-days to any base, design day profiles including clear sky solar radiation, and decadal trends in some of the key design values. The data for all functions can be viewed in I-P or SI units and can be toggled between the units.

A variety of figure widgets are also available to enable examination of various aspects of the climatic data beyond that in the simple climatic design conditions in the summary PDFs. Each figure can be exported in SVG or PNG format, and the underlying data can be downloaded in CSV format.

The Weather Data Viewer 2021 data can be accessed a number of ways:

  • Basic Subscription – the interactive interface can be accessed online as a cloud-based annual subscription
  • As part of an ASHRAE Handbook Online annual subscription – this access is the same as the Basic Subscription access. Users can access Weather Data Viewer 2021 in ASHRAE Handbook Online under 2021 ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals on the Additional Features tab of the Home page or from the Contents or Additional Features tabs of Chapter 14 of 2021 ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals.
  • Enterprise License – the Microsoft Excel spreadsheets of the climatic design information for all 9,237 stations published in the 2021 ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals and all 500+ design elements and all 9,237 *.WDV files can be downloaded for use by software developers

Standard 169-2021, Climatic Data for Building Design Standards

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 169, Climatic Data for Building Design Standards, serves a comprehensive source of climate data for those involved in building design, and provides a variety of climatic information for designing, planning, and sizing building energy systems and equipment.

The standard provides dry-bulb, dew-point and wet-bulb temperatures; enthalpy; humidity ration; wind conditions; solar irradiation; latitude; longitude; and elevation for locations worldwide. Standard 169 also includes statistical data, such as mean temperatures; daily ranges; degree hours; and seasonal percentages within ranges of temperatures.

Data and tables have been completely revised for the 2021 edition. The standard now includes climatic data for 9237 locations throughout the world, an increase of 1119, as well as climate zone maps for major global regions. Data are compiled from the 2021 ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals, Chapter 14, “Climatic Design Information,” and other data developed specifically for this standard from ASHRAE RP-1847, “Updating Climatic Design Information for the 2021 ASHRAE Handbook, Standard 169, and the Handbook of Smoke Control Engineering.”
