ASHRAE Honors Members for Exceptional Contributions to the Industry and Society

ATLANTA (June 22, 2025) – ASHRAE recognized outstanding achievements and professional excellence during its 2025 Annual Conference in Phoenix, where members were honored for their significant contributions to the Society and the built environment. The awards ceremony celebrated individuals whose work has advanced innovation, sustainability and technical leadership in HVAC&R and building sciences.

"We are proud to recognize this year’s ASHRAE Honors and Awards recipients for their exceptional accomplishments," said 2024–25 ASHRAE President M. Dennis Knight, P.E., BEMP, Fellow Life Member. "Their commitment to excellence and advancement of sustainable building practices reflects the very best of our Society. We extend our congratulations and gratitude to each honoree."

Dan Mills Chapter Programs Award

Gutemberg Rios, received the Dan Mills Chapter Programs Award, which recognizes excellence in chapter program endeavors. Rios is an Engineer, PRIMATE Intelligence Consulting Ltda, Brasília, Federal District, Asa Norte, Brazil.

Donald Bahnfleth Environmental Health Award

Jeffrey Siegel, Fellow Member, received the Donald Bahnfleth Environmental Health Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service focused on environmental health issues. Siegel is a Professor, University of Toronto, Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

George B. Hightower Technical Achievement Award

Phil Naughton, Life Member, received the George B. Hightower Technical Achievement Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service in the area of Technical Committee, Technical Group, and Technical Research Group activities. Naughton is Principal/Owner, Eco Cleanroom HVAC Consulting, Austin, Texas.

Government Affairs Award

Billy Austin, P.E., BCxP, BEAP, BEMP, CDP, CHD, HBDP, HFDP, OPMP, Fellow Member, received the Government Affairs Award. The award recognizes individuals for outstanding effort and achievement in state, provincial and local government activities in connection with technical issues related to the Society. Austin is Principal, Shultz Engineering Group, PC, Charlotte, North Carolina.

Homer Addams Award

Cary Faulkner, received the Homer Addams Award, which recognizes a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project at a university that has graduate programs in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and has achieved a high standard of performance in this work. Faulkner is a Mechanical Engineer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Washington.

Lincoln Bouillon Award

Jean Leilani Grace N. Clemente, received the Lincoln Bouillon Award, which recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing membership. The award commemorates Presidential Member Bouillon’s efforts in recruiting new members. Clemente is Country Manager - Philippines, K-flex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Klang, Selangor, Malaysia.

Lou Flagg Historical Award

Alan Y.W. Lam, received the Lou Flagg Historical Award, which recognizes a Chapter Gold Ribbon Award recipient for compiling information on outstanding historical projects or persons related to HVAC&R. Lam is a Senior Associate, AGA Technical Services Ltd., Hong Kong.

Lower GWP Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Innovation Award

The following groups received the Lower GWP Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Innovation Award, which recognizes individuals who have developed or practiced innovative technological concepts applied in developing countries to minimize global warming potential through refrigeration and air-conditioning management.

Residential Buildings Service Award

Paul W. Francisco, Fellow Member, received the Residential Buildings Service Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service focused on Residential Building issues. It serves to heighten general membership awareness of, and interest in, Residential Building activities. Francisco is Director of the Indoor Climate Research & Training Division, Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, Champaign, Illinois.

Standards Achievement Award

H. Jay Enck, BCXP and Jason Glazer, P.E., BEMP, received the Standards Achievement Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service for developing ASHRAE standards and guidelines. Enck is Chief Technology Officer, Commissioning & Green Building Solutions, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia. Glazer is Principal Engineer, GARD Analytics, Inc., Arlington Heights, Illinois.

William J. Collins, Jr. RP Award

Amanda Forest, received the William J. Collins Jr., RP Award. The award, named in honor of Presidential Member Collins, recognizes a chapter RP chair who excels in raising funds for ASHRAE’s RP campaign. Forest is a Mechanical Engineer, JASEL Engineering Inc., Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

YEA Award of Individual Excellence

Aaron Besseling, Akshay Bhargava, P.E. and Jayson Bursill, received the YEA Award of Individual Excellence, which recognizes YEA members for superior efforts during the preceding Society year in the promotion and success of YEA and its programs. Besseling is a Project Manager, Besseling Mechanical Inc., Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Bhargava is a Mechanical Engineer, CMTA, Indianapolis, Indiana. Bursill is a Data Scientist, Delta Intelligent Building Technologies, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

Youth Outreach Award

Juliana Velez, received the Youth Outreach Award, which recognizes the outstanding effort of a member who actively engages a youth audience in their country, region, or local community through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics activities. Velez is a Data Scientist, Measurabl, Oakland, California.

ASHRAE Journal Paper Award

Max Sherman, Fellow Life Member, received the Journal Paper Award for the article, “IAQ Paradigms - The Next Generation,” judged to be the best article published in ASHRAE Journal.

Sherman is Principal, EPB Consulting Group, Moraga, California.

Science and Technology for the Built Environment Best Paper Award

Eric Martin, Tanvir Khan, Bereket A. Nigusse and Charles Withers, Jr., received the Science and Technology for the Built Environment Best Paper Award for “Estimating internal moisture generation rates in recently constructed, occupied homes in the southeastern United States.” The award is for the best paper published in the volume year of the Science and Technology for the Built Environment, the ASHRAE research journal.

Martin is Program Director, University of Central Florida / Florida Solar Energy Center, Cocoa, Florida.  Khan is a Sr. Research Engineer, NCASI, Newberry, Florida. Crosby Field Award

Michael Huylo, P.E. and Atila Novoselac, Ph.D., received the Crosby Field Award for “CHP Digital-Twin-Model for Control Optimization and Transition to Renewable Based Fuels,” which was judged to be the best paper presented before the Society. The Crosby Field Award is named for a former Presidential Member.

Huylo is a Graduate Research Assistant, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas. Novoselac is a Professor, Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas.

Willis H. Carrier Award

Patricia Guillante, received the Willis H. Carrier Award given to a member 32 years of age or younger for presenting an outstanding paper at a Society conference. The award was presented for “Understanding Housing Challenges in Rural Alaskan Communities.” Guillante is a Ph.D. Student, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan.

ASHRAE Best Paper Award

  • Shayan Mirzabeigi, Ph.D. and Bing Dong, received an award for “Miscellaneous Electric Loads Prediction By Deep Learning Implementation: An Educational Case Study.” Mirzabeigi is an Assistant Professor, The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF), Syracuse, New York.   • Ken Takahashi, Hiroyuki Ichikawa and Ryozo Ooka, Fellow Member, received an award for “Explainable AI Framework for Model Predictive Control in Energy Management Systems.” Takahashi works for the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan. Poster Presentation Award

The Poster Presentation Award recognizes the authors of the best poster session paper presented at a Society conference during the previous year.

Eunice Foote Decarbonization Award

Stet Sanborn, Fellow Member, received the Eunice Foote Decarbonization Award which recognizes a member who works to reduce carbon emissions in the built environment. Sanborn is Vice President, SmithGroup, San Francisco, California.

Louise & Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award

Christopher Chao, Fellow Member, received the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award. This annual award is given to an ASHRAE Fellow for continuous preeminence in engineering or research work. The honor was initiated in 1979 by Presidential Member Bill Holladay. Chao is Vice President (Research and Innovation), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong.
