New! Basic Concepts for Demystifying Dehumidification

Course Length: 3 hours

This course bridges the gap between traditional “A-to-Z” dehumidification load calculation methods and delves into the practical realities HVAC engineers face when designing high-performance moisture control systems. Rather than revisiting only standard procedures, the curriculum examines the often-misunderstood psychrometric and thermodynamic principles that fundamentally determine the success or failure of dehumidification systems.

Participants will explore what dehumidification is truly tasked with accomplishing in both conventional and highly moisture-sensitive environments, including schools, offices, hospital operating rooms, indoor agriculture (grow rooms), and lithium battery manufacturing facilities. Emphasis is placed on understanding and controlling the air’s absolute moisture content, not simply relative humidity.

The course reviews key findings from ASHRAE research on damp buildings and human health, connecting building science to real-world consequences such as microbial growth, material degradation, and indoor environmental quality concerns. Attendees will examine practical moisture load analysis methodologies, evaluate the influence of outdoor climatic conditions on indoor humidity control, and learn how to select appropriate ASHRAE climatic data. The session concludes with a discussion of ventilation air treatment strategies and system approaches that improve reliability, efficiency, and long-term humidity control performance.
