This in-depth course offers a comprehensive overview of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems tailored for professionals in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It is designed to equip HVAC engineers, designers, consultants, and technicians with the knowledge required to effectively design, apply, and operate VRF systems in various commercial and residential applications.

The course also emphasizes design considerations, ASHRAE standards compliance (including Standards 15 and 34), ventilation strategies, life-cycle cost analysis, and safety regulations regarding refrigerant usage and real-world case studies. Attendees will leave with a solid understanding of the design, installation, commissioning, and operational best practices for VRF systems in modern buildings.

    Who Should Attend?

HVAC design engineers, mechanical contractors, commissioning agents, facility managers, energy consultants, architects and MEP designers, government and municipality engineers.

    You Will Learn To:

    • Evaluate system types: heat pump, heat recovery, air- and water-source VRF.
    • Learn compressor inverter control and system modulation.
    • Apply ASHRAE safety and performance standards in design.
    • Perform load calculations and unit sizing with zoning analysis.
    • Implement energy-efficient ventilation and heat recovery methods.
    • Analyze life-cycle costs and sustainability impacts of VRF systems.
    • Ensure compliance with refrigerant charge and safety limits per ASHRAE 15 and 34.

District energy is a secret weapon for climate action and human health. This course teaches the basics of district cooling systems and also brings benefits across the sustainable development agenda—improving human health by cutting air pollution, increasing access to affordable and clean energy, and creating green and decent jobs.

The course presents practical guidance ensuring that when designed and operated properly, DCS can be an energy-efficient alternative to conventional in-building chilled water plant adding to an owner’s sustainability portfolio and allowing the building owner to focus on their own business, rather than operating and maintaining a chilled water plant.

    Who Should Attend?

Designers who are responsible for specification, design or installation of district cooling systems. Owners and Operating staff who are responsible for the decision to transition to district cooling.

    You Will Learn To:

    • Understand the basic components of a District Cooling System (DCS) and how these components interact.
    • Appreciate the complexity of the planning process for a DCS and the players that must be involved for success.
    • Grasp the fundamental processes and equipment of the DCS central plant and the basic options.
    • For the chilled water distribution systems, know the basic construction materials used for piping and appurtenances and their advantages and disadvantages.
    • Know the important factors that should be conveyed to building owners when considering DC to serve their buildings.

    Instructor:

    Hassan Younes, Member ASHRAE
