Connect: NOU & ASHRAE Collaboration

UNEP ASHRAE Connect

UNEP ASHRAE Connect aims to establish focal points of communication at the national level in developing counties between National Ozone Units (NOUs) and ASHRAE chapters.

NOUs complete a form requesting ASHRAE volunteer support of activities advancing technology advancement. Next, a meeting is scheduled with ASHRAE chapter volunteers to discuss the potential for collaboration.

The desired outcome of Connect is establishing working relationships at national levels between governmental ministries and HVACR industry professionals in developing countries. The goal is to enable and encourage technology applications that use ozone-safe and lower GWP refrigerants for refrigeration and air conditioning.

Examples of potential engagement include:

  • Knowledge Exchange
    • Request an ASHRAE speaker
    • Inquiry about technical documentation
    • ASHRAE standards adoption or interpretation
    • Technology Application
  • Technical Assistance
    • Technical advice on technology policy
    • Review of training curriculum
    • Paraticipation in technical training sessions
  • Strategic Support
    • Establishing a local ASHRAE Chapter/Section
    • Regional coordination across multiple NOUs
    • Multi-year workforce development planning.

    FAQs

Is ASHRAE funded by government? No. ASHRAE is funded by individuals in the HVAC&R industry who pay annual dues.  While ASHRAE standards are often adopted by governments, ASHRAE remains an independent technical society.
What type of support can ASHRAE provide or not provide? ASHRAE CAN assist NOUs by providing technical guidance, workforce development, access to educational opportunities and job boards, and public outreach, and based on a tiered support to:
    Tier A (knowledge exchange)
    Tier B (technical assistance)
    Tier C (strategic collaboration).
ASHRAE CANNOT provide financial support, promote commercial products or services, make employment placements, nor certify work or skill level.
Is there a cost to use UNEP ASHRAE Connect? No. Participation by ASHRAE members and chapters in the initiative is made voluntarily.
Are ASHRE volunteers participating in Connect eligible to receive financial support for travel and/or time? Generally, funds for travel or other expenses are not offered to ASHRAE volunteers participating in Connect.  If, however, a request from an NOU would benefit from ongoing involvement by ASHRAE volunteers or development of technical content would benefit other NOUs, financial support might be considered. NOUs should consult with their Regional Network Coordinator.
