Alternative water-cooling sources for data centers offer potential benefits including reducing consumption of potable water and space for equipment. Two existing systems, a deep lake source cooling project at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and a Google data center in Hamina, Finland, are discussed. Also included in this issue: Performance metrics for commercial buildings, cooling with exhaust fans, and heat recovery chillers and large campus systems.
