ASHRAE Monterrey Chapter Celebrates University Accomplishment

From eSociety, December 2017

In October, ASHRAE members and student members participated in a weeklong program to celebrate the 70th anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Electrical Mechanical Engineering (FIME) at the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico.

7th Annual Indirect Evaporative Cooling Contest

During the week, FIME and the Monterrey ASHRAE Chapter supported the 7th Annual Indirect Evaporative Cooling Contest during the celebration.

Participants in the 7th Annual Indirect Evaporative Cooling Contest.

Sixty-eight students attended the contest that required the participants to design, build and test a simple device that uses the principles of indirect evaporative cooling to lower the temperature as much as possible.

A jury evaluated 17 pieces of equipment and judged that equipment based on the time per minute, the temperature of the wet bulb, the temperature of the dry bulb in the enclosure, the indirect air coil outlet temperature, the percent relative humidity in the air from the side of the indirect cooling and the best design structure of the device.

The winners were awarded with various scholarships and recognitions granted by the FIME and the Monterrey Chapter. The teams that developed the three best devices were:

First place: Edgar Guajardo, Roberto Reyes and Rolando Rubio

Second place: Alexis Rodriguez, Ismael Morales, Ezequiel Morales and Alejandro Lara

Third place: Daniel Duarte, Ernesto Lopez, Sergio Rodriguez and Jorge Alonso

Best structural design: Catalina Martinez, Karla Neira, Alec Garza and David Rodriguez

The Monterrey Chapter thanks Christopher J. Ahne, the ASHRAE Region VIII Chair of Students Activities, and Jonathan I. Symko, ASHRAE Region VIII DRC, for supporting this student’s activity.
