William (Bill) Nelson, P.E.

Biography

William Nelson is president emeritus of GLHN Architects & Engineers, Inc. and has used his nearly five decades there to promote a philosophy of innovative and energy-efficient design. In the 1970s he developed and implemented the firm’s first energy management program, Systematic Analysis of Vital Energies (SAVE). GLHN encourages sustainable concepts and value engineering, promoting LEED accreditation in its disciplines and proactive involvement in the development of wind and solar energy.

Nelson serves as an adjunct instructor for the University of Arizona AME Department and is involved with the Pima Community College Curriculum Board. He also initiated an in-house scholarship program at GLHN. As an instructor with the APPA Institute for over 18 years, Nelson teaches courses on refrigerants and chillers, basic HVAC systems, and utility master planning. He has also written and delivered over 15 papers and presentations on utility development planning. Twice a year, Nelson is the principal facilitator and organizer of symposiums held for facilities and central plant personnel at universities in the Southwestern United States.

Nelson has been actively involved in education his entire career. He is also a veteran passionate about supporting other veterans. He has guided work (as both project principal and mechanical engineer) on VA projects and audited mechanical systems at over 100 VA medical centers, identifying opportunities for energy conservation. Nelson is a current board member for the Catalina Council Boy Scouts of America and the Greater Tucson Fire Foundation. He has been married to his lovely wife Dianne for 47 years.
