Commissioning Design/Build Projects

Journal

This article explores ways to enhance the commissioning process for design/build projects, and help address potential risks unique to, or heightened by, the design/build delivery method. The resulting commissioning process is better suited to such projects by improving commissioning outcomes and controlling the costs of providing commissioning.

ASHRAE Technology Award: Design Build Manufacturing Plant

Journal

The 874,700 ft 2 Caterpillar Axle Manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem, N.C., uses high-efficiency HVAC systems, solar hot water energy recovery and storage and geothermal systems to save nearly 30 million kBtu/ft 2 per year.

ASHRAE Technology Award: PSU Design Build Project

Journal

A multiuse six-story building at Portland (Ore.) State University uses an existing groundwater well that delivers enough 56°F (12.8°C) water to provide cooling except during the warmest periods of the year. The groundwater is restored to the aquifer through a new injection well.

Building Sciences: Designing for Floods

Journal

The best way to design for floods is to build where you don’t get floods. But since Joe can’t convince people not to build there, he will try to help reduce the risk.

Teams, Contracts, & BIM

Journal

Team selection, organization, and teaming agreement practices (contracts) may change soon as our industry moves toward more integrated building design (IBD) and integrated project delivery (IPD) methods. Building information modeling (BIM) is predicted to be the predominant design and management tool used to design, review/approve, build, commission, and operate buildings.

Competitions

ASHRAE sponsors these competitions to encourage students to become involved in a profession that is crucial to insuring a sustainable future for our Earth, the design of energy-efficient HVAC systems.
