New! Advanced Dehumidification System Design
Course Length: 3 hours
Building on the psychrometric and moisture load fundamentals established in Basic Concepts for Demystifying Dehumidification course, this session provides an in-depth examination of the primary dehumidification technologies available to HVAC engineers and system designers in today’s commercial and industrial markets. The focus shifts from “what moisture control requires” to “how to achieve it reliably and efficiently.”
Traditional refrigerant-based cooling and dehumidification systems will be analyzed, including direct expansion (DX), chilled water, and glycol-cooling systems. The discussion will extend beyond basic operation to examine coil performance limitations, sensible heat ratio implications, low dew-point constraints, reheat requirements, part-load behavior, and energy impacts.
Desiccant dehumidification technologies will be thoroughly explored, including both solid desiccant (rotary wheel) and liquid desiccant systems. Participants will examine adsorption versus absorption mechanisms, regeneration energy considerations, low dew-point capability, and integration strategies with conventional cooling systems.
The course culminates in a comparative evaluation of all major technologies, with practical guidance on selecting the appropriate solution based on dew-point targets, process requirements, energy considerations, and climatic conditions. A real-world case study of a hospital orthopedic operating suite will be reviewed to demonstrate how more stringent humidity control requirements influence system architecture, redundancy, and operational strategy.
This session emphasizes technology selection, performance trade-offs, and real-world design decision-making in high-performance moisture control applications.
