Cleanroom Particle, Chilled Beam Systems Research Published

An ASHRAE research project set out to understand particle sizes and rates of particle generation for nearly 20 representative processes in pharmaceutical and biotechnological cleanrooms. The airflow data, particle data and cleanroom air conditions were recorded for operational and at-rest conditions to deduce the particle generation rate for more than 12 processes.  

The final report includes summary tables collected in this study and can predict particle generation rates or ranges for the surveyed processes. The results are fundamental to develop design guidelines that can assist engineers, owners and contractors to arrive at appropriately sized and efficiency cleanroom systems.

A technical paper has been submitted for future publication in the ASHRAE’s Science and Technology for the Built Environment.

1399-RP, Survey of Particle Production Rates from Process Activities in Pharmaceutical and Biological Cleanrooms, was sponsored by TC 9.11, Clean Spaces. The principal investigator was Dr. Li Song with the University of Oklahoma.


Active chilled beam systems are gaining in popularity due to their thermal and energy performance.  An ASHRAE research project has performed experimental studies to examine detailed energy and thermal performance of these systems.

The final report details 54 tests conducted on six active chilled beams to investigate critical impact factors on the cooling capacity of active chilled beams. The water-side cooling capacity, air-side cooling capacity, cooling coil water outlet temperatures and the room air temperature were tested and analyzed for the cases with various combinations of ranges of the supply air flow rate and the supply water temperature.

Resulting measurements can be used to validate and improve currently available energy simulation predictions for chilled beams.

A technical paper has been submitted for publication in ASHRAE Transactions.

1629-RP, Testing and Modeling Energy Performance of Active Chilled Bean Systems, was sponsored by TC 5.3, Room Air Distribution. The principal investigator was Prof. John Zhai with the University of Colorado.
