I have been working the in the HVAC&R industry since graduation from college. I pursued an education and career in the building design and construction industry because I had a passion for buildings. Following college, I took a job working as a consulting engineer designing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for many different types of new buildings and renovations. It was not until I was a professional that I understood the impact the career path I had selected had on peoples’ quality of life, welfare, and safety. I found this career exciting, challenging, and very rewarding.
Seven years into my career, I made the decision to move from the design side of the profession to an academic appointment at Kansas State University. This career choice allows me to still be engaged in the industry, but instead of doing design full-time, I have the opportunity to educate and influence the next generation of designers. In this role, I am able to communicate the importance of the degree they are pursuing and promote good design practices.
I became involved ASHRAE as a student member and was able to complete my engineering degree with the support of an ASHRAE scholarship. Following college, I became involved in my local chapter – Cedar Valley ASHRAE. When I transitioned to my academic role, I became involved at the Society level. The interaction and networking with professionals involved in HVAC&R afforded to me by ASHRAE has been invaluable. The many benefits I receive in return for my time volunteered to ASHRAE proves to be best investment I have made for my career.
