Criteria for Building Automation Dashboards

Journal

Building operations share similar principles with the operation of a motor vehicle: both run on “fuel,” both require continuous maintenance for proper operation and longevity, and both can be optimized to operate at greater efficiencies. However, while the automobile dashboard has become a universal industry standard, the majority of buildings still operate without the convenience and effectiveness of this valuable feature. This article proposes a rational basis for evaluating the performance criteria of building automation dashboards.

Energy Management with Building Automation

Journal

With energy costs rapidly rising, it's vital for buildings to be retrofitted for energy management using building automation systems (BAS). This article briefly analyzes the issues and priorities for specifying, purchasing and designing a BAS to manage energy (EMS) in HVAC facilities, with high efficiency, low environmental impact and within a reasonable budget.

XML and Building Automation

Journal

Using XML in building automation systems (BAS) has become a hot topic - but do the results live up to the hype this article explains the fundamentals of XML in nontechnical terms and provides tools to understand how XML related to building automation protocols such as LonMark® and BACnet®.

Building Automation for Multisite Facilities

Journal

Consolidation, acquisition, growth and deregulation are hallmarks of today's business climate. These forces place a new twist on managing facility operating expenses. Pressure for energy efficiency is familiar to HVAC system designers. However, designers are dealing with new facility management issues, namely system operation issues, for a collection of buildings or an enterprise.

Addressing today's energy and environmental concerns is equally the responsibility of building owners, designers, and contractors. It is through this team effort and a common vision for conscious and effi cient living that sustainable building practices can be successful. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has developed a concise system in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) that allows the industry to be guided in the best practices in sustainable design and operation. Relying heavily on industry standards, such as those developed by ASHRAE and other professional organizations, designers and owners can be guided in best building practices.
