Digging Deep: Propelling St. Patrick’s Cathedral Forward

Before a renovation that began 11 years ago, the 139-year-old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York was running on city steam, and its mechanical systems were in need of an upgrade. Now, the cathedral has a geo-exchange (geothermal) heat pump system that meets the cathedral’s heating and cooling demands. The deepest of the system’s 10 wells is 2,220 ft (670.5 m) deep under St. Patrick’s—more than 6.5 times as deep as the cathedral’s 339-foot (103.3 m) spires.

Describes Southern California Gas Co.'s 45,000ft2 (4,181m2) Energy Resource Center (ERC), aimed at helping decision-makers find the most energy- efficient, cost-effective and environmentally-sensitive solutions to their energy requirements. The ERC has 36,000ft2 (3,344m2) of remodelled space and 9,000ft2 (826m2) of new space, all designed to showcase the latest energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive technologies. The building is one of 25 buildings in the U.S. to be designated as Energy Star Showcase buildings by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The mechanical system design objectives were to reduce the building's source energy consumption by 30% than mandated, to use minimum refrigerant, to achieve higher indoor air quality and to optimise performance of both existing and new mechanical systems. 1997 ASHRAE Technology Awards: Modernising City Hall

Describes the renovation of the building services for the City Hall in San Bernardino, California, a six-storey building with a penthouse and basement containing more than 100,000 ft2 (9,290 m2) of conditioned space. Describes how the facility was modernised by replacing the chiller plant, deferred maintenance issues were solved, CFCs eliminated and comfort and indoor air quality maintained while maintaining the building in operation during the renovation works. Presents a schematic of the revised chilled water system and illustrates reduced electricity bills in a bar chart.

1997 ASHRAE Technology Awards: An efficient cold store facility

Journal

Describes Albany Port Authority's (Australia) new cold store facility, the winner of a 1997 ASHRAE Technology Award. The facility has two large freezer compartments separated by a common ante-room and a loading dock area. Focuses on the refrigeration system design which was specially developed to be at the forefront of technology, using an environmentally friendly system design and a refrigerant which satisfied the requirements of the Montreal Protocol. Sets out the refrigeration system design criteria in a table. Discusses equipment selection, existing structure and maintenance access, anteroom pressurisation and ventilation, air distribution, snap cooling facility, energy saving features, computerised monitoring and controls, energy consumption. Summarises energy consumption over a 12-month period.
