Energy Management Best Practices

Course Length: 3 hours

Buildings use 40% of U.S. energy, of which one-third can be cost-effectively saved. To achieve this goal, building professionals can utilize energy management—an orderly process in which managers use resources at their disposal to accomplish clear, energy-saving objectives. This course weaves together energy management principles and best practices of the Standard ISO 50001, ASHRAE Handbook—HVAC Applications, ENERGY STAR® guidelines, and ASHRAE/IES Standard 100-2015, Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings.

Many jurisdictions such as Washington DC, already imposed penalties for buildings not to comply with building energy benchmarking requirements, which sets the maximum penalty to $10 per square foot of gross floor area, which reduces the maximum penalty amount for most buildings, and caps the maximum penalty at $7,500,000.

The practical experiences of successful energy managers are presented. Numerous case studies are discussed including a hospital, high-rise building, bank, data center, and convention center. Together, these successful examples demonstrate how to effectively take practice energy management in a real-world and certified as an “Energy Star”. This course also provides resources available for energy management and serves as a gateway to many in-depth ALI courses available from ASHRAE for better energy management.

This course will provide a gateway to applicable industry guidelines, standards, other ASHRAE ALI courses, and publicly available resources to the end-users and practitioners.  It will summarize the available energy management best practices related to sustainability goals and greenhouse gas emission reduction.  The course will also overview water efficiency and help establish the links between energy and water use.
